Playbook: There was a flurry of intrigue about Bernie on Tuesday night when Tandens nomination was pulled. Its no secret that Sanders and Tanden have a fraught history. His staunchest supporters have long been her fiercest detractors, and Tandens meanest tweets have been barbs directed at Sanders going back to the bitter 2016 Democratic primary, when Tanden was a top aide to Hillary Clinton.
Three White House sources said that Sanders would have been a yes vote on Tanden if the White House had been able to find a Republican vote to replace Joe Manchin, the Democrat from West Virginia who started all of this by publicly opposing her Feb. 19.
But Bernies mittens are not clean. By withholding his support Sanders left Tanden twisting, fostered an atmosphere of a nominee in trouble and made it unlikely for any Republican to step forward in support. Why would a GOP senator break with her leadership unless she was certain she was providing the decisive vote?

(21 posts)I think Neera Tanden is the sacrificial lamb for those who think "Well, we can't just vote for all of his nominees." Probably a deal with Manchin as well--Tanden is gone, just get the others through already.

(22,913 posts)A lot of Bernie's supporters opposed Tanden, but he would have delivered his vote for Biden to her if that would have put her over the top. That is the bottom line. Any attempt to implicate Bernie in Tanden's withdrawal is a real stretch. Murkowsky knows Sanders, the Senate is a small club. If three White House sources knew Bernie would back Tanden, his position was not a deep dark secret. Unless there is rock solid reporting that Lisa sought an assurance from Bernie that he would back Tanden if she did, and he refused to give it to her, any blame for her demise rests solely on Manchin.
