WASHINGTON (AP) Kirsten Gillibrand was the first Democratic senator to call for her colleague Al Frankens resignation in 2017 as he faced allegations of sexual misconduct, building a profile as a leading advocate for women that became the centerpiece of her 2020 presidential bid.
But the New York senator is taking a different approach when it comes to sexual harassment allegations hitting closer to home, those against her states Democratic governor, Andrew Cuomo.
In a series of statements, Gillibrand has said accusations of offensive behavior by Cuomo are serious and deeply concerning and that the three women who have come forward have shown tremendous courage. She has said that the claims against Cuomo are completely unacceptable and called for a full investigation but stopped short of demanding his resignation.
Top Democrats in New York and nationally have similarly refrained from suggesting that Cuomo step down. That includes New Yorks senior senator and the chambers majority leader, Democrat Chuck Schumer. Its a far more cautious approach than the parade of Democratic senators who followed Gillibrands lead in calling for Frankens resignation.

(3,974 posts)What the article omits is that over 30 other Senators called for Franken to resign the same day, some just a few minutes after Gillibrand. It also omits that Gillibrand wasn't even the first to go on national TV to call for Franken's resignation, that was Harris.

(16,993 posts)is no "double standard." Her 2017 comments about Bill Clinton resigning are what distinguishes her from the other politicians. The Clinton brand was good enough for her for years, and then she came out with 2017 comments about Bill. It's just that simple. It's what people are not remembering about her when evaluating the other politician's positions.
Her own words don't recognize her own role in why she of all Senators has been criticized:
Who is being held accountable for Al Frankens decision to resign? Women senators, including me, Gillibrand said in July 2019, about a month before she left the presidential race. Its outrageous. Its absurd.
iemanja
(53,072 posts)didn't commit sexual abuse. Bill Clinton did.
But keep blaming women for the actions of men.
Nixie
(16,993 posts)Bill Clinton is an ex President, so he didnt have to do much to help her. This was after he was President, so you do the math.
iemanja
(53,072 posts)It's as though you think her behavior is worse than sexual harassment. In fact, that is the point of your effort at deflection. Gillibrand is vilified because she doesn't cooperate with male supremacy. The days when men can get away with anything are coming to an end. Me Too has shown that women have a right to decide who touches their bodies. That decision does not belong to the men who feel entitled to kiss, touch, grab, fondle, or have sex without a women's consent.
That you blamed Hillary for Bill's behavior by referring to "the Clintons" sexual assault reveals a great deal. In your effort to target Gillibrand in order to defect from the alleged sexual harasser Cuomo, your go to method is to defoul another women.
Nixie
(16,993 posts)her 2017 comments about Bill Clinton. Its just that simple and doesnt deserve all this angst and dishonesty about a simple observation.
She accepted the Clintons help politically, which had nothing to do with Bills affair with Monica. So the observation is that Gillibrand (not all women) - Gillibrand - might be the one with double standards. She accepted help from a supposedly known sexual harasser when it benefitted her. Its just that simple.
And have you ever known a MeToo accuser in real life? I do, and this individual is a liar. I have personal and documented experience about her lies which I happily shared with a private detective who knocked on my door about her. So sorry, but Im not sold on the idea of giving any individual unfettered permission to smear others. This woman I know lied about other women, as well. Some people lie.
iemanja
(53,072 posts)because you know one in real life? Poor men. However do they endure a world in which they can't harass, assault, and rape at will. You sure showed those women.
Your post absolutely confirms my earlier comments. I see you.
Nixie
(16,993 posts)Not mine. Women lying about other women is not about men, as in the MeToo accuser example I gave. Its about liars.
Im on to the accusations around here, though, so no worries about what you think you see. Wink.
Nixie
(16,993 posts)She should have been fired for that. Who goes around showing their underwear at work? She should have been removed immediately. So where are we getting sexual assault about the Bill/Monica affair??
This kind of morphing isnt good for discussion. Bill had an affair with Monica. Now were calling it assault.
iemanja
(53,072 posts)That I don't care to get into. It wasn't just Monica.
And if you don't think Bill Clinton committed any offenses, why are you blaming Gillibrand for "taking help" from "the Clintons"? Just opportunism? ETA: Based on your other post, I see it's far more nefarious than opportunism.
Nixie
(16,993 posts)being followed for days about a simple observation with responses that get more and more abstract just to pretend theres some big gotcha when all I brought up was common sense.
Gillibrand is complaining she is being vilified because shes a woman and I observed that it was probably about her double standards with Bill Clinton. If he had so many charges against him, then why on earth would she have accepted his help to build her political career?? Youre actually making it worse for her if thats the case.

So long as both people are ok with it, it turns into judgement. With the exception being that our employment laws have changed.

that insists men should never be held accountable for their actions and that women are instead to blame. It's about promoting a culture of male supremacy and impunity for sexual harassment and sexual assault. People can make every excuse to justify such cases, but the ultimate result of such discourse is to ensure that male sexual abuse continues unfettered.
In such cases, men are ALWAYS defended and the women always called liars. That they then turn around and blame a woman for those men's behavior is an extension of those goals.
Note that many male Senators also spoke out against Franken, including Bernie Sanders. Yet those same people would never dream of blaming Sanders. It doesn't fit their agenda.
