I have a friend who is big on CT. Not necessarily a RW but certainly shares some of their loopier ideas. And he hates trump, so I still talk to him. He sends me videos every now and then. Some are ok, some are sort of leaning crackpot. But now and then, especially when discussing Covid he goes full CT. Theres a lot about his Covid theories that are insane, but when it starts tying in with Bill Gates I stop watching. I just wonder how Gates got such a position in the CT and RW crazo-sphere?

(16,850 posts)I talked to a man 20 years ago who believed that Bill Gates was in control of the country and possibly the world. He thought Gates could shut down the whole internet with the flick of a switch. I'm not saying I'm a computer whiz; I know very little. But people who have no knowledge about computers are scared to death of them.
Another issue is that CT believers don't trust philanthropists. They think that philanthropists have ulterior and sinister motives. A lot of the Gates bashing got started when Bill Gates started his foundation. Look out, folks! The Gates Foundation is helping the poor. He must be the AntiChrist!

(25,576 posts)and I can't post this as an OP except in the Speculation forum...
I'll phrase this carefully: forget about Gates of course, but something's up here. This is not the natural order of things in my opinion. I'm not crazy, I'm not paranoid, and i usually ignore coincidences but something just ain't right with this whole scenario. We may never "know" what, but this just isn't the natural order of things. Just a feeling. and yes...I practiced through the AIDS epidemic, formerly known as GRID (a story for another day) and never felt this way. Something's just plain wrong.

(100,099 posts)In the talk he said that "the next thing that is going to kill millions of people won't be a war. It will be a virus. Think microbes and not missiles.".
Because of this the conspiracy theorists think he gave us COVID.

(20,586 posts)a state income tax. R's of course hate that as the poor pay a larger percent of their income in state sales tax than the wealthy. It makes it look like Gates is a Democrat - the enemy.

(118,757 posts)world to live and everyone has a longstanding satisfied customer relationship with him. And if his billions are going to find game changers on renewable energy sources and vaccines, thousands of that is what each person paid him for windows and MS Word. And people might feel good. And the GOP can't have people feeling good for making the world better for all.

(6,398 posts)The decades of deregulation, tax reductions, etc. by the GOP made him a Billionaire. And now he's giving clean water to people in Africa, major sin in the eyes of GOP voters. He's supposed to be like Steve Jobs, a major asshole.
Not saying Bill Gates is a saint, working the corporate for over 20 years has taught me the top of food chain get there by being assholes. Shit, yesterday, found out two executives who were long life employee's got the boot.
How dare someone become wealthy and not be a complete and utter sociopath?
He's not playing the game right. He's raising the bar by acting like a human being rather than working to perpetuate the "rich get richer" system he benefited from.

(1,962 posts)They are pissed off that someone that looks and sounds like the ones they used to beat up, and stuff into lockers and trash cans, has succeeded and made it in life. They "won" in high school (or so they think), so seeing the "loser" win in life drives them nucking futs.
It may sound shallow, but, we are talking about a cult that passes itself off as a party full of shallow people.
