A couple of years ago I had to be air lifted by helicopter. That less than one hour trip would have cost me more than 75k in the US. Anywhere else in the world it would have been a minute fraction of that. I am very glad that I had very good healthcare coverage from my employer.

(4,470 posts)for sudden abdominal pain required a CT scan and ultrasound. Diagnosis, small kidney stone. Given pain meds (ineffective), sent home to pass the stone. Total time at hospital was 4 hours. Just got the bill for $12,000+. Still waiting to see what I will owe after insurance.

(21,385 posts)she stayed in the hospital for 2 days, her child stayed in the NICU unit (intensive care) for 7 weeks. Her bill was $246,000.00. McGee hospital in Pittsburgh. Hey but McGee has a yearly reunion for preemie babies and parents at the zoo.
She has a Cadillac insurance plan so her bill was like $150.00. There is a big difference even among people who have "insurance."

(10,053 posts)If you have good insurance through an employer, it may cost quite a lot but at least you can get good medical care. Over the past decades, mthough, as Congress has allowed big employers to change the rules, fewer people now get healthcare. I recall that in the 80s, around 70% of workers were covered by employer plan. Today, its less than 50%. Companies like Walmart limit employee hours to 30 hours a week to avoid paying benefits. Many companies classify people as independent contractors and avoid benefits. Smaller businesses use the excuse that they cant afford healthcare for their employees, and perhaps some cant, but for some greed wins out over healthcare for employees.
We are one of the riches, most successful countries in the world, yet we cant provide healthcare for our citizensbecause the Republican Party and their voters refuse to allow it.
