Leftovers happen. People miss their appointments. Vials come with extra doses. Any thawed vials must be used within 6 hours, or they get thrown out.
Looking to get vaccinated but cant get an appointment? Join the standby list to get connected with local providers with extra doses.

(522 posts)My sister and I heard that the health department had a standby list. We added our names, were called the very next day. We couldn't go then but told them we would be free the next day. They called the next morning and it was all over and done with by noon.

(8,445 posts)My daughter, who has many health issues, got on a list yesterday. She's notorious for ignoring phone calls, mostly because she feels pretty crappy almost all of the time. I told her she better answer every call now and be ready to go at a moment's notice.

(12,393 posts)after learning two friends got called. As it happens they did end up calling me the same day I got the vaccine earlier in the morning elsewhere. I could have saved myself a 60 mile trip had I known.
By all means, sign up if youre still in an area where there are long waiting lists.

(25,862 posts)(New Mexico) telling me not to show up in the hopes of getting a shot, and not to query local pharmacies.
I'm 72, and I know several people younger than I am who've gotten the vaccine in my state. This is supposed to be a state that is wonderfully well in distributing the vaccine. So why have I not come to the top of the list? Why do so many people I know here and in other states who are younger than me who are getting the vaccine? What am I missing?
Oh, and I was a patient at my local hospital back in December. Heart attack. Very serious one. I'm still not at the top of the list. Okay, so by the end of April, according to Biden, there will be enough doses for all of us. Color me skeptical. June, maybe July is my best guess, based on how it's going so far.

I saw two pharmacy sites sitting idle yesterday and when I asked they said they indeed had vaccine there. But, weren't allowed to dispense it due to the centralized State appointment system.
Like you, I am high risk. I'm willing to wait, but, this is a two way street. Some transparency and an acknowledgement of my concerns and value to them would be nice. Instead of passive/aggressive missives.
But, right now it's like a trip to the fucking DMV.

(8,445 posts)I hope you get it soon.
I'm up here in Pueblo, CO, and I heard on the news that we should sign up with the health department when we were eligible. I did that, and shortly after I became eligible I got a recorded call, and three days later had my first shot at the drive-through clinic.
The recorded call said to not show up early. I had chosen the first time slot in the morning - between 9 and noon - and I decided to ignore that warning to not show up early and drive over and see what was up. I got there at 8:03 and there were already about 50 cars in line, and they were already checking people in.
I hope you get your vaccine soon. It makes no sense that someone in your age group hasn't been able to get it yet.

(18,890 posts)But given that I live in Jemez it's not like I could dash to a Walgreens in 20 mins anyway.

(25,862 posts)Okay, so I am fine that teachers and every single hospital employee and retail workers and restaurant servers are ahead of me, I really am. But why are random 50 year olds getting the vaccine ahead of this 72 year old?
I know, I'll get the vaccine soon enough, but if Alaska can now vaccinate everyone over the age of 16, why am I still waiting? And in a state that is supposedly doing better than most other states. Which are vaccinating people younger than I am and who I personally know are not at any greater risk than me. Did I mention I had a very serious heart attack right before Christmas? And others I know who were patients in my hospital have gotten the call.
Perhaps this is related to the following: I've long known that the technology gods don't like me. All too often technology does not work when I'm around. However, the parking gods ADORE me, and I always get good parking spaces. Oh, and if I'm a passenger in your car, trust me, you'll get a good parking space.
So I'm guessing that the vaccination gods are indifferent to me. They simply don't give a flying whatever if I get the vaccine or not.

(4,113 posts)Our hospital put out a notice that said, essentially, they had extra doses. Im 70 with MS so got my first a month ago.
I registered my husband but had failed to fill out the part about chronic conditions. I phoned first thing for my husband; his autoimmune condition didnt qualify him but his having had cancer and radiation did! He gets his first dose today!
I wouldnt have known about hospital if a friend hadnt seen that notice.

(25,862 posts)A week or so ago I looked at a site that showed vaccines available. Here, there were maybe two pharmacies with vaccines, and neither one had available appointments.
Again, I'm playing by the rules and somehow others whom I think should be well below me on the list are getting their vaccines. Makes me almost wish I were an anti-vaccer. Sigh.
Honestly, even though we are still in the first half of March, I'm beginning to think June or July, maybe August before I'll get the vaccine. How many out there intend to refuse the vaccine as a percentage of the population? I'm guessing that despite the coverage they get in the media, they are a genuinely trivial percentage of the population. So shouldn't that move me up in the line? Why exactly are all those others getting the vaccine ahead of me?

I hope so.

(25,862 posts)telling me not to do anything like that, they'd let me know when I got to the top of the list.
I'm in cardiac rehab three days a week, and asked the man in charge about it, and he said they have nothing to do with the shots.

(8,445 posts)My son called me yesterday telling me that he found out that pharmacies have back-up lists. When he found out about it, he happened to be in Sam's Club, so he went to the pharmacy to sign up and the person asked him if he wanted the shot right then. And he got it!!!
He immediately let the rest of the family know about this back-up list thing. My daughter is on a list now.
I'm getting my second dose of Pfizer on Monday morning.

(1,327 posts)If there are extra doses that will be wasted at the end of the day, we'll drive over and get our shots. Otherwise we'll wait until it's our turn to get it with our age group. But I think it's good that they're maintaining those lists so that no doses go to waste.

(35,688 posts)I'm having the same experience Poindexter is having.
I work. With kids, in education. Teachers are supposed to be able to get the shot but I don't see how that makes a difference when I go to the signup site. Most people I know have the shot and are already planning gatherings (without me, 'cuz I won't have the shot).
Oh well, at least I have an N95.
