Washington(CNN)Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday acknowledged security changes need to be made at the United States Capitol but the Republican of Kentucky told CNN, "I think we've overdone it" when it comes to the current security measures in place.
More than two months after the January 6 insurrection, National Guard troops continue to patrol the Capitol grounds which are surrounded by razor wire fencing. US Capitol Police say an elevated threat level remains an issue, though McConnell disagrees.
"I just checked earlier this morning. There are no serious threats against the Capitol. I think we're way overreacting to the current need," McConnell said.
"I'm extremely uncomfortable with the fact that my constituents can't come to the Capitol. With all this razor wire around the complex, it reminds me of my last visit to Kabul. This is the capital of the United States of America. Do we need some changes? We probably do. But I think we are continuing to overreact based on current threat levels, to what is needed here at the Capitol. It looks terrible to have the beacon of our democracy surrounded by razor wire and National Guard troops," McConnell added.
On Tuesday, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin approved the request of US Capitol Police to keep nearly 2,300 National Guard troops on the Capitol grounds through May 23. There are currently around 5,100 Guard members on duty around the Capitol area.

(13,421 posts)In fact, as I recall, news reports were saying he was hidden somplace in a "secure location" while the mob beat the security forces with confedrate and pendejo45 flags. Somehow, I don't think he or his personal security detail were too happy to see that gallows they built out front of the building either...
Asshole.

(6,537 posts)From attacking the Governors to reducing Capitol protection, they seem to have held a strategy meeting. They have some hidden agenda they are all working on.
I vote for adding 5,000 more National Guard troops. Who cares how it looks? All they proved on Jan. 6 is how much we need all that. They are crazy.
I think they should establish that Capitol National Guard unit that has been suggested. And, I think they should expel that B. woman for threatening Pelosi, and anyone attempting to evade the scanners in an effort to conceal carry.
The entire Capitol building has been compromised with maps, etc. Just lock it down.
Too bad, Minority Leader McConnell. The Insurrection didn't work. We were lucky. And, now we are going to punch you in your miserable face.

(10,272 posts)It looks worse to have it forcibly assaulted by people who voted for you, mitch.
If you didnt want it to happen, (or risk it happening again), maybe you should have voted to convict the fuckhead who ordered it assaulted.
If McConnell needs to rig the system in KY in order to retire, I'm almost ok with that at this point.
