So I heard about a policy supposedly being pushed by the Biden administration called 30 by 30. The aim is to have 30% of American land conserved by 2030. My RW dad was trying to convince me this means confiscating farm land. Of course this is a recurring conspiracy theory in farm country about like how the liberals are going to confiscate everyones guns. But I noticed they have no details on how they would acquire land to conserve. Does anyone know more about this?

You can do this in a nice way like "I hadn't heard anything about it, can you point me to some reliable websites or other information that verifies it?"
Then point out the problems if he comes up with anything.

(6,594 posts)The Keystone XL project used Federal eminent domain to do just that.
And no, I haven't heard of 30 by 30.

(14,118 posts)I snipped out some points from the interview between VANEK SMITH and
LAUREN LEATHERBY
Q: VANEK SMITH: It's about 1.9 billion acres of land that we're dealing with, entirely. What was the biggest use of land in the U.S.?
A: LEATHERBY: Just livestock in general. About 41% was used for either grazing or to grow food for livestock - was, really, pretty surprising to us. (think leased U.S. Forest Service land here)
Q: VANEK SMITH: What was the second biggest use of land in the U.S.?
A: LEATHERBY: Forestland. And that's a combination of unprotected forestland, which means that it's not a part of a national park or state park, and about 14% was owned by corporations. But it was quite striking to see this massive chunk of the U.S. designated as forestland, and about 2% of that goes away and then comes back every year (laughter) - gets replanted. (again think U.S. Forest Service land here)
Much more at link, including the statement that the 3d biggest use of land here is
cropland. Looks like that National Government already owns all the land Joe needs!

(7,218 posts)That evil being capitalism. More serious.
I used to live on Nantucket. When I bought land I got hit with a 2% fee.
Whats that? A fee on all property transactions with the proceeds going to the conservation foundation, established by the voters.
When property they wanted came on THE OPEN MARKET - they would BUY IT! They paid what the owner asked, and put it into the land bank.
Do that on expensive property for which the property prices have skyrocketed, and a huge number of transactions over the past 58-years, they now own more than half the island.
Farm and prairie land is the same - BOUGHT - at the sellers price.
