8. As much flack as he's gotten, there has been a lot of progressive legislation moving forward

Although time will tell, if we keep going in this direction, Biden's administration may wind up being the most progressive since FDR.

10. Never, but while LBJ's administration definitely passed very progressive civil rights legislation...

I often wonder if the civil rights bills passed under LBJ would have been passed if circumstances were different. LBJ felt backed into a corner with the civil rights movement and got the legislation through because it was needed most in the country at that moment. I'm from Texas, LBJ is from Texas. When the civil rights legislation went through he famously said he was throwing the baby out with the bathwater, meaning Texas. He didn't run for reelection, so we never got a chance to find out, but LBJ's civil rights legislation killed his political career in the south. I think he didn't run for reelection, because he knew he couldn't win.

11. All of these bills pass because their times demanded it.

And the Vietnam War had quite a lot to do with Johnson not running again. He said the Democratic party lost the South for a generation with the civil rights legislation but he, unlike republicans today, he favored the country over his party and signed the bills.

Btw, the Great Society programs encompassed not just civil rights, but also educational funding (Pell grants etc.), medical care (Medicare/Medicaid), urban problems, rural poverty (electification), transportation, etc.

There was something for everyone.

I've no doubt that everything was ready to go, and the big green button was pushed before the ink was dry on the President's signature.

Republicans are getting these. It’s unfortunate we are rewarding irresponsibility.

I don’t expect direct deposit unless there’s a place to change it. I hope they don’t try to send to the closed account again and just send a check.
