Capitol attacker claims his threats were just 'locker room talk' and he was drugged: court documents

Sarah K. Burris
March 11, 2021

The indictment for Capitol attacker Thomas Edward Caldwell revealed some information about the defense he intends to use in court.

snip

Among the things heard on videos of Caldwell include: "Every single b*tch in there is a traitor," and "We need to do this at the local level. Let's storm the capitol in Ohio. Tell me when!"

But it's what Caldwell is claiming in court that sounds familiar.

"Citing private, off-color jokes where Caldwell discussed 'hanging the traitors' and going after politicians, the Government attempts to characterize the defendant as a danger to the community," court documents from his lawyers said. "Caldwell's 'locker room' talk and male bravado, however, was not intended for public consumption, was likely done under the influence of prescription painkillers, and didn't result in him committing one act of violence—on January 6th or before."

I wish these "gallant patriots" would just own up to their "patriotic actions" instead of chickening out. Playing commando isn't nearly as much fun when the FBI comes knocking.

It's one thing to play the "locker room talk" game. It's another to do so when there is recorded evidence that that defense is nonsense.

I've been on painkillers of one kind or another since 1994 and thoughts such as those have never entered my mind. But I seem to have peculiar body chemistry. I don't recall ever feeling high or silly. The pain just sucks it up. I feel kinda cheated. 😏

I fell and had a severely fractured spine in several places and surgery and had to have pain killers or I would have been 10/10. Same when I fell and broke my leg and ankle and had to have surgery.

I got yelled at by the Physical Therapists because I would not take pain killers after awhile and could not do my exercises because of the pain.

Yes I feel so good on painkillers, no angry feelings or desire to act out in a destructive way at all. No desire to take down the Capitol or lynch Mike Pence.

is...normal. Like I don't have to crawl up on the couch in the fetal position, crying, 24/7. I've had 13 bouts of shingles down my right sciatic nerve that's caused permanent nerve damage. It's like a constant, nagging, bad toothache from my spine to the knee that never, ever stops. It's enough to drive you nuts, but you learn to live with it. Have to. Meds dull it but never really goes away.

I'm so glad surgery helped you! Chronic pain can be a soul crusher.

I also had some special cortisone spine treatments that really helped with my back pain.
I don't know if that is something that would work with your condition.
The injections go right into the spine and the pain is gone in 24 hours.

I am really glad I don't have to take pain meds because I would probably end up like those old people hanging out of cars drugged out.

it starts aching again once the numbing medication they include with the cortisone wears off. I had an appointment with my pain doc on Monday. We discussed treatment options and agreed that what we're doing right now is about the best we can do.
