Bill Kristol Endorses DC Statehood While Also Suggesting US Invasion of Cuba

During Monday's House hearing over whether the District of Columbia should become the nation's 51st state, neoconservative political analyst Bill Kristol offered up quite the head-scratching hot take: Make D.C. a state, and while you're at it, make Cuba one too.

"One reason I'm for DC statehood: The growth in size of the republic — and our distinctive manner of growth, admitting states with equal status — has always been a sign of our vigor," Kristol tweeted. "60 years at 50 states is enough. Time for DC, Puerto Rico, Cuba (as soon as it's free), 1 or 2 more?"

Twitter users were quick to point out the absurdity of Kristol's proposal that Cuba, a sovereign nation, should become a U.S. state, and dragged him for his imperialist idea.

"Cuba? We want DC and our territories to have the same freedoms and liberties the rest of the country has," political activist Daryle Lamont Jenkins tweeted in response. "Bill Kristol turns it into a 'sun never sets on the American Empire' scenario! And again I ask… Cuba? Colonizer, take a seat!"

Taking over Cuba seems to be a random thought. What about the territories we already have?

are closer in some ways than most realize. There's a lot of Cuban culture here in FL, a lot of families living in both nations, but also physically, only 90 miles.

Let's take over the Cayman Islands instead and re-patriot all those US dollars that were never taxed!

taking over another country without any consideration of what the people of that country want. Of course they want to be Americans, right? Also, who is going to take over that country? Is Kristol going to risk his life? Those marines and sailors are ready to give their lives in order to satisfy Kristol's whims, I'm sure.

I'm quite certain doesn't have the slightest desire to saddle the U.S. with a Cuban independence movement. Americans can visit, even just day tripping, in Cuba without permanently committing to redistributing income from wealthy mainland states to help Cuba achieve U.S. living standards, and then no doubt become an enclave of the very wealthy.

Fwiw, the big advantage of taking Cuba on as a state would be to solve problems of poverty, organized crime, influence of hostile foreign states, undesirably close to us. But all the attention to this is because it is an odd notion. Our usual way of handling these problems is to provide funding, beneficial trade agreements, expertise, etc, to other nations, though, as desired. Much easier and cheaper what you were imagining.

it would reduce the VITO of red states and whose populations are lulled into a sense of entitlement. The country can not move left so long as sparsely populated red states like wyoming and south dakota have the same representation as New York, California, and Texas.

Kristol and I agree on some things. This has NEVER happened before. Kristol was "The Man Who Is Always Wrong" for years. Everything he said or wrote turned out to be wrong.

But in the past couple of years, he and I believe the same things.

Is it me? I don't think so but it's hard to look at one's self objectively. (Just kidding, of course.)

intellectuals, to maintain some influence and relevance as their traditional conservatism was purged from the right by pretending to adopt some of the dishonest viewpoints that replaced it. Didn't work, and that seems to be past. I enjoy listening to his sophisticated conservative take on what's happening among the depraved, idiot right.

Don’t invade where you aren’t wanted. Nobody really wants the US to invade Cuba these days except the exiles (A disappearing bunch), their descendants, and cynical and clueless right-wing politicians and sympathizers.

While I have no great love for the Havana regime, I know something that Bill Kristol and others of his mindset don’t: that whatever the flaws and failings of the current Cuban regime, the people on the island of Cuba see the current Cuban regime as their legitimate government.

And the way the Florida Republican Party is going, the Cuban government is edging towards having more popular support in Cuba than the Florida Republican Party has in Florida.
