Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana on Tuesday suggested that the issue of gun violence is overblown and should be put "in perspective," hours after the United States suffered its second mass shooting in a week.
"We have a lot of drunk drivers in America that kill a lot of people," Kennedy said during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on gun violence. "We ought to try to combat that too."
"The answer is not to get rid of all sober drivers," Kennedy continued. "The answer is to concentrate on the problem."
Kennedy further attempted to downplay the matter by drawing comparisons between being a gun owner to being Muslim.

(9,960 posts)... doesn't matter if the shooter is drunk or not drunk, in my opinion. Maybe this Louisiana Kennedy should concentrate on more sober comparisons.

(3,784 posts)..............there are a shit-ton of drunk driving laws on the books of EVERY State, and they're being modified and made stricter every single year. I don't hear anyone saying, "Drunk driving laws don't work because people are just going to drive drunk regardless." I also don't hear anyone saying, "What about all the RESPONSIBLE drunk drivers, who drive drunk and make it home safe and don't kill anyone? What about THEM?"
Are you SURE you REALLY want to have this conversation, John?

(8,080 posts)since passage of stricter laws, and their enforcement, against it.
And I also suspect you're being sarcastic when you suggest prohibition as a way to curb drunk driving.

(33,594 posts)You need a license and to pass a test to drive. Can we do the same for guns?
