I’m the discussion thread I posted on this took. it was suggested that this question should have been a poll.
It is utterly heartbreaking how many of you do know someone killed by a firearm.
I guess it shouldn’t be surprising but it still is.
America is a truly fucked up nation.

(31,974 posts)Disgruntled investor murdered one of his partners. With a gun.
Nice guy, originally from Germany, living in the Bay Area. Had dinner with him a few months before.
On edit: I guess this falls under the "robbery or other crime" option

(8,623 posts)had failed in his suicide attempt. He was the father of two young children.
I will never forget him: Young, maybe in his 20s, with red hair and an entrance wound on the his right temple, exit wound on his left. The gunshot wounds were still horribly black and raw. He was on the bed playing with his genitals when I arrived to see him. He spoke nothing but nonsense and had no idea what he was doing. He would never be the same man, husband, or father.
Yes, I hate guns.

(37,748 posts)In 1986, my first high school crush some years after graduation at the hands of an estranged boyfriend.
In 1993, my father by his own hands (to avoid the consequences of late stage cancer)
In 2015, my off-his-meds, substance abusing brother by his own hands.
In 2017, his surviving wife of twenty two years during a shooting spree at a Texas church.
As an American male in his mid-fifties, I'm guessing my experiences are pretty typical. More's the pity.

(7,947 posts)Crime and domestic.
A student of mine was shot by her husband for the life insurance. He was an attorney. Of course he said a black man broke into their house and killed her. Of course, he'd done it.
It was during winter break. I'd just given her an A for the semester.

(13,733 posts)3 suicides, 1 domestic violence, 1 gas station robbery.
Not counting the 1/2 dozen to combat or insurgent activity.

(19,107 posts)It was decades ago, long before I was born, so I technically didn't "know" her; but I still feel like it counts.
My mother always swore it was an accident, but another aunt assured me that it was suicide, and I believe her. (My mom was too young to fully understand what was going on at the time, and the aunt who told me about it was an adult when it happened and therefore in a much better position to know the score.)

There had been arguments between her BF and the neighbor previously. This was in 1974 or 75

(61,444 posts)The first was a pretty close friend, depressive, who shot himself at 22.
The second was an older acquaintance (he'd been an assistant Scoutmaster in my troop) who was murdered about five years after I left Boy Scouts. He'd have been around 40 at the time. He taught at the local university and a student hid outside his house and shot him in the head because he'd flunked his class.
The third was a fairly close friend from high school and later (a fellow fast-food drudge like me at the time). He was murdered in some sort of drive-by random shooting.

(28,261 posts)Was killed by his own son, after years of abuse. The whole family was understanding; his gma paid for her grandson's defense atty after he killed her son.
There was a long generational history of alcoholism & abuse in that family. They were really fucked up.
My husband luckily escaped it, except for his crazy alcoholic mother & passive/aggressive father. He move 100's of miles away for college & never returned. We were estranged from his side of the family most of our lives and never have had any contact with any of them for decades now.

(231 posts)In August 1977 a friend (Cathine Rada Brooks) and her next-door duplex neighbor were murdered in the neighbor's apt by a guy (Robert E Williams) that my friend didn't know, but the neighbor and I both did. I didn't know her neighbor, but we knew a lot of the same people.
Ironically Cathy and Williams had both babysat my toddler daughter so I could go to a weekly class (Cathy) or run errands (Williams - once)
When Cathy's 5-yr-old daughter woke up the next day and couldn't find her Mommy she called Cathy's BFF Annie who I've known since kindergarten.
Our parents were neighbors. I was at my parent's house when Annie's mom called to ask if I knew Cathy and tell them the news.
This article was published in December 1997 just before Williams was executed 20 years after the murders.
