(7,286 posts)in the failure to move forward in the Senate after Sandy Hook massacre. And today it is reported he is against background checks!!
FoxNewsSucks
(10,435 posts)I was already disgusted enough with him, but to fuck up the response to Sandy Hook, I just don't know what to say.
If I said the truth, certain trolls would try to get this post removed.
There's no excuse for failing to, at a minimum, support background checks. The majority of the country does!
msfiddlestix
(7,286 posts)to do that with every bill, and confirmation. We have a dilemma keeping power in the Senate. Going to have to make some several wins next year. Big time. Until then, he's going to be gaming for the spotlight with everything we try to pass.

(11,578 posts)If Manchin decides to cross the aisle, Mitch McConnell is back as majority leader. (Its not a stretch to think McConnell has been encouraging Manchins defection). Then what happens to voting rights, an infrastructure bill and everything else in Bidens agenda? Until more Democratic senators are elected, Democrats are in a very precarious position.

(7,263 posts)The Rethug Governor hates him.
He is not enough of a Qanonist to get elected in that state.
It's the same old story far right Dems always face...voters will not vote for Rethuglican lite when they can vote for the real thing.

She blames Manchin for not building the coalition to pass gun control laws but I recall it was VP Bidens job to build those coalitions and get gun control passed post Sandy Hook. Not a mention of Biden (eta: as failing to deliver on his mandate).
The AWB failed horribly (40-60) in the Senate with 15 Democrats voting against it.
The Manchin-Toomey background check law actually had the most votes with 54 for and 46 against. Manchin was the most successful of all the Democrats in that gun control effort.
Rachel needs to be fact checked by her people.
Silver Gaia
(4,546 posts)She did that before she mentioned Manchin.

(10,779 posts)Point being, with the filibuster rule in place, nobody could get anything done on gun control, despite watering down the bill to placate "conservative" gun nuts. Now, Manchin is again trying to convince Dems he can get stuff done if we placate "conservatives" by leaving the filibuster in place and backing off on stuff the American people clearly want.

when he came closest to reaching 60 votes on a background check law.
And yes she did discuss Biden in heroic terms for merely having laws proposed, but didn't describe him a failing to pass laws as she did with Manchin. I did originally missed her discussion of Biden because I misunderstood a note upthread that the Manchin take-down began at the 7 min mark.

(22,913 posts)I love Rachel Madow, but over the years every once in a while I've noticed her drop any attempt to look at the whole picture when she is in the throes of a passionate political take down of someone. She can revert to becoming a propagandist for her personal viewpoint, and she can be ruthless while doing so. More than 9 times out of ten my own viewpoint completely aligns with her own while she is doing so, so even though I might notice the role she is playing I tend to look past it, though a small part of me usually still observes "Rachel's in political assassin mode."
The first time I strongly noticed this about Rachel was during the 2008 Democratic primaries, when she made little effort to veil her strong preference for Barack Obama while she negatively covered this or that thing about Hillary Clinton at the time.

(13,783 posts)... my own, very unpopular, I'm sure, thinking last night. She kept insisting that Manchin's compromise would accomplish just a "tiny, tiny" bit of the bacckground checking that Biden wanted. I kept thinking, sixty percent of gunsales happened through licensed dealers, who have to do background checks. Of the remaining 40%, Manchin's proposal would cover gun shows and private sales. What's left uncovered? How could Manchin's proposal be a "tiny fraction" of what Biden wanted?
The statistcs are from Rachel's show.

(34,184 posts)If I recall correctly, the Manchin-Toomey version would have required background checks at gunshows and online sales.
So it had what many people called the family and friends exception.
It would have been a massive step forward.
