(5,935 posts)1. I have no idea if this works
I saw this on two sites, one of which usually has reliable info:
https://amynorthardcpa.com/how-do-i-reach-a-real-person-at-the-irs/
The IRS telephone number is 1-800-829-1040.
The first question the automated system will ask you is to choose your language.
Once youve set your language, do NOT choose Option 1 (regarding refund info). Choose option 2 for Personal Income Tax instead.
Next, press 1 for form, tax history, or payment.
Next, press 3 for all other questions.
Next, press 2 for all other questions.
When the system asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, do NOT enter anything.
After it asks twice, you will be prompted with another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Finally, press 4 for all other inquiries. The system should then transfer you to an agent.

ETA: Lifehacker claims to have success with this and advises that there will still be an approximately 30-minute wait.

I used it just last week and have used it many times over the course of last year.

(14,559 posts)4. Thanks, just the kind of things I'm looking for!
Unfortunately I can't get through on 1040. I did get through on 0922 but the phone tree doesn't match what you've listed.
I'll just keep trying 1040 until it opens up.

(54,445 posts)3. Depending on where you live
1500 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, in Washington, DC, and walk in the front door.
From the other suggestions I've been told, it might be the least complicated way!
