(31,165 posts)The interview with the naval historian (33 mins) was also informative.
I've been a subscriber for years having been involved with international shipping.

(1,896 posts)Obviously they have a standard procedure for this, albeit never exactly this. In your opinion does the stress on the unsupported keel create more than a minimal risk to its integrity, and will the 33 additional vessels in that section need to shut down?

(31,165 posts)I was always involved as a shipper not a carrier so I'm not familiar the structural characteristics of the vessels other than the container cells.
What I can tell you is that freeing the vessel will be a massive job...they're dealing with one of the largest ships afloat. It won't be easy.

(1,896 posts)What was suggested is that freeing the ship is not like pulling a car out of a ditch and then driving away. This, in my opinion, after the requisite procedures, may extend beyond a few more days.
There was a comment (I think in the article) was that the tugs could only exert so much pulling pressure without damaging the ship.

(5,557 posts)No red paint showing at the stern, what is probably at least 20 feet showing at the bow. A significant portion of the bow bulb is even exposed.
That ship is majorly beached.

Are ships required to have a Suez pilot on board or just the regular crew for navigation?

(1,896 posts)This sounds encouraging. (edit - this info appears to be false - see 2nd reference below)
It typically takes 1-2 days for vessels to pass through the canal

Edit: Slow But (Almost) Ready Suez Salvage Team May Be Delayed Another 5 Or 6 Days
Work to re-float the Ever Given and free up oceangoing carriers hauling almost $10 billion of oil and consumer goods resumed Thursday in Egypt. Tugs and diggers have so far failed to budge the vessel, and some experts say the crisis could drag on till Monday. The Suez Canal Authority temporarily suspended traffic along the waterway on Thursday.
