(488 posts)Or USPSA. They will have lots of local matches around AZ.
Go to a match, early is best to help set up. Tell them you want to learn to shoot but know zip. They will be welcoming and help you find a coach.
When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.
Edit to add: DO NOT go to a gun store!
The USPSA guys and gals are the best in the world.

(6,884 posts)Some of this will not apply to you and it's longish (about 20 minutes), and you don't have to agree on every point. But every point made is something you should definitely think about.
Best of luck to you and your Mom. Come here any time with any quesiton. Someone will know something.

(205,467 posts)I used to shoot (rifles) competitively and I do not choose to own a gun. You'd be better off with a less lethal defense, some kind of spray or a self defense course.

(205,467 posts)Though my personal gun was fairly light since I was smaller than the guys on my team. I shot on an otherwise all male team in high school, though I learned to shoot at a girls' summer camp and was on an all female team there. And we never used any sort of clip, loaded it one bullet at a time, those were the rules. And we were thoroughly trained and had to know and understand safety rules before we ever picked up a gun. We shot at targets at 50 feet. One of our unwritten rules was to never shoot anything living. No one ever did.

If it's locked away safely, it won't do squat if your home is invaded by a criminal
