The GOP's New Rule: White People Can Shoot, But Black People Can't Vote

There have been seven gun massacres in seven days, but congressional Republicans are staying the course of claiming that passing any kind of gun-control legislation “would do nothing to stop these murders.” It’s a message that they’ve paired, for good measure, with the road-tested racist tactic of stirring up white delusions of Black criminality among their base. The message is, essentially, guns don’t kill people, Black people do — so be sure to lock and load.

Senator Tom Cotton argued that Black people calling police “bigoted and prejudiced” and “demanding that they be defunded” is what causes mass shootings to happen, because despite being in Congress for nearly a decade, he apparently didn’t hear about all the mass shootings in this country long before the defund movement gained traction last summer.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene chooses violence almost every day by tweeting equivalencies between BLM and terrorism, while Ron Johnson basically claimed guns don’t even count as lethal weapons as long as white people are carrying them (“This didn’t seem like an armed insurrection to me,” Johnson said about the Capitol insurrection, though he admitted he would’ve been scared if the rioters had been “Black Lives Matter and antifa protesters.”).

Senator Ted Cruz, the biggest congressional recipient of gun lobby dollars at last count, went on TV this week to pin mass shootings on BLM because—I’m still confused by the racist math here—white people are worried that roving bands of Black civil rights protesters are “going to come into the suburbs and raid people’s homes.”

I don't recall either of the two most recent mass murders who were easily able to acquire AR-15s shortly before their rampages mentioning their outrage at law enforcement funding policies as their reasons for murder. Did I miss that article?

High capacity magazine and military tactical weapons marketed to the incel/preppers and their ilk are about fear, nothing else. Their right as white people to shoot whomever they wish in whatever numbers they wish is more important than any one else's right to live. If Black people and Asians and Latinos armed to the teeth and open carried, bet they'd pass different laws. They don't even pretend.

But they're pro life....

it would be in the same manner they slaughtered my ancestors 100 years ago. Now we are looking to get out, while our so-called leadership is courting the NRA to move to OK and passing bills to make protesting illegal and running down those doing it with a car legal. Somedays down here, it's like I took bad acid and fell into a spaghetti western.

movements. Folks taking it to the streets is the only way to show the issue is really serious. If we wait for significantly large body of mostly white political class to do the right thing on their own, they clearly won't in many states. Just the opposite.

one of the states just passes a law stating that only white people can vote.

They can take it to the SCOTUS "originalists" then, under the stupid ass argument that "well, black people couldn't vote then, why should they now!".

I am very, very much done with that whole party. They are almost universally horrible humans.
