(1,654 posts)Even among the awfulness of the Georgia voter suppression bill, Sunday voting is preserved. (It's not required, but still allowed.)

And it's just a damn good idea to begin with.

(22,692 posts)The Black Church has been getting souls to the polls for more than 60 years
October 30, 2020 8.45am EDT
At Black churches up and down the U.S., religious slogans have been supplanted with another message in the run up to Nov. 3: Vote!
The landscape of the 2020 general election has been dotted with efforts by the Black Church churches that have traditionally had predominantly African American congregation to encourage voter registration, mobilization and protect against efforts to suppress the vote.
Under slogans including Souls to the Polls, AME Voter Alert and COGIC Counts, Black denominations and national bodies such as the Conference of National Black Churches have partnered with civil rights organizations including the NAACP in a concerted effort to increase voter turnout among African Americans.
The push comes amid deliberate tactics to make it harder for Black and Latino Americans to vote, including purges of voter rolls in communities of color, strict voter ID rules and restrictions on polling places. As a historian, I know these tactics are nothing new nor is the role of Black Churches in countering these moves.

I just really like the messaging. It's so perfect! I'm into slogans and this one has always been a stand-out for me. And I've wanted to say so for a long time.

(43,408 posts)His refusal to run against that piece of dogshit Collins helped cost us the seat. Gideon was a very weak candidate and and was a native Rhode Islander until her mid 30's, which Collins smashed her on. Manchin's fucking endorsement of Collins also fucked us, as she blanketed the state with adverts using Manchin as proof she was a bi-partisan indie. Bullshit!

Celerity
(43,408 posts)who hurts us badly by refusing to run.
Kansas - Sibelius was our ONLY hope, and she likely would have won the open seat, this was the consensus of all major newspapers and experts
Tennessee- Tim McGraw TWICE refused to run (2018 and 2020) for two open seats after promising for ages he qoukd run when he turn 50 (he is 52 now). 2018 was the worst. Blue Wave open seat, shit opponent (brain dead MAGAt Blackburn)
Alaska - We didn't even field a canadiate. Previous winner ex Senator Begich refused to run.
North Carolina - Foxx, Stein, and especially Jeff Jackson all refused, leaving us with the already previous loser Cal Cunningham, who then blew a decent lead with his fucking insanely stupid sexting scandal. At keast Jeff Jackson is running for the open seat in 2022 (and should win, barring voter suppression).
Iowa - Vilsack or even Axne would have been far better candidates than the weak Greenfield, but both refused ro run.
Then 2 that are murky:
Kentucky - This was lost as soon as Beshear declared for Governor the year before (and won). He was the only shot we had against McTreason McTurtle.
Texas - Hard to blame Beto for sitting it out, that fucker Cornyn is not Cruz, and Beto likely would have lost, thus basically destroying his career at statewide level or at least severely damaging it.
Schumer and Cortez Masto were poor at recruiting the best candidates in many states. It helped fuck us hard. We so should be at 53 to 55 Dem Senators now. I was warning about this back in late 2019 and then all throughout 2020.

(21,487 posts)and ordering or commanding someone to run?
You might believe that King would have been a great Senator, but apparently he did not agree, for reasons we might not know and that he is not obligated to explain.
I find the idea that people have to obey an order to become a candidate a bit disturbing.

(16,420 posts)The idea that certain people are somehow personally obligated to run for office, regardless of their own wishes or inclinations seems very odd to me, and, yes, disturbing.
I remember reading comments in various places on the internet last year saying that Michelle Obama should be (in effect) forced to run for potus, despite the fact that she has made it abundantly clear that she has no interest in running for any elected office and actually finds politics distasteful. I remember thinking that those comments were wrong headed, and I still think so.
That's not how any of this works.

(21,487 posts)She knew that she was not cut out to be a politician, but she did what she was good at. She sought out young women with promise and nurtured them in developing their abilities. It has paid off in a slew of well qualified women in influential organizations and political offices.

(43,408 posts)I never said command anyone. There was no order to disobey, that is a false framing.
Two races (Bullock Montana, and yes, Greenfield, who was not the best but still had a shot in Iowa) were also bollocksed by poor national funds steering.
Kentucky, Texas, South Carolina, and (to a lesser extent) Maine were either full fantasyland races (the first 3) or near it (Maine with the weak Gideon).
Yet people became so emotionally invested due to the opponents and sent insane amounts of money. Hundreds of millions of dollars were shit away on those raises, and yet Bullock and Greenfield had leads spending far less money. BUT the, in the last 2 to 3 weeks, they were buried with a over 100 million dollars in dark money RW smear attack adverts, and their coffers were depleted, thus they could not respond and were defeated. The national apparatus did not shift monies effective. I warned on this too. The most galling was South Carolina (other than maybe Kentucky, but IMHO SC was worse). There was one major outlier poll that showed Harrison within the margin of error and near tied with Graham. No other poll showed this. Harrison's campaign ran that poll in adverts (even after even the outlier should a sure loss a couple weeks out) all the way up to the lection. It gaslight people into think he was going to win, when in reality he had no chance. People flooded in over 100 million usd, all on a fantasy, and that money was just shit away. That money alone (not even talking about TX, KY, ME) could have likely saved Bullock and/or Greenfield. I maxed out to Bullock's campaign, and knew exactly what was happening in real time. It sickened me to see him lose in the way he did, especially as i watched people delusionally think that we were going to win TX, ME, and especially KY and SC, and back up that flawed think with hundreds of millions in wasted money. I also knew we were in big trouble when Cunningham's sexting scandal broke, and his pretty decent actual lead against a very weak Tillis crumbled to dust.
Thank fuck for Georgia (which is now in massive danger for 2022 with Warnock, as Georgia just passed insane Jim Crow-level voter suppression laws today). IF Manchin and/or Sinema end up blocking all of the new voter protection bills, we are so fucked, especially when you add in the new round of RW partisan gerrymandering (as we had horrid State assemblies results in 2020, so now the post 2020 census re-districting is going to be insanely bad), plus the SCOTUS's likely destruction of further pre-existing federal voter protections, and finally the hundreds of new voter suppression laws that are going to start to cascade down (hundreds spread out over 43+ states) at state level from the Rethugs.

(21,487 posts)What kind of response did you expect after blaming someone who chose not to run for the lack of a larger majority in the Senate, as if they had no right to choose?
I stand by what I said.

(34,075 posts)Voting on Sunday is wrong because it is relatively common for Black churches to go from the pews the polls, increasing voter turnout in that population.
