Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhat are millions of "unbanked" Social Security recipients to do with a paper stimulus check?
Because of how the SSA (under Trump appointee Saul) has mishandled the IRS request for SSA recipient's info, millions of disabled Americans will, eventually, be receiving a paper check, rather than a direct deposit onto the debit card (Direct Express, administered by Comerica bank) that is the usual conduit for funds.
So many disabled folks use these debit cards instead of maintaining a traditional banking account.
When they are issued a paper check, what are they supposed to do with it? Pay a bank a fee to cash it? Then store the cash under a mattress?
If they have to pay someone, then I detect a financial motive for this "screw up" in the first place!
Fire all of Trump's embedded moles!

(17,066 posts)they can't get a direct deposit either. So I guess that just leaves the debit card? I know many don't like those either. It would be great if people could choose the method of payment they prefer.

(26,748 posts)People who use Direct Express (the debit cards) for their benefits will get the stimulus on that card.
Anyone who still gets paper checks for their other benefits presumably has the ability to work with paper checks.

(153,169 posts)seems there are a lot of folk without bank accounts? not sure but it sounds like their benefit is usually sent straight to a debit card? I surely do not know.

(36,310 posts)And I'm totally unfamiliar with SS recipients only having a debit. If I remember correctly, I had to have a bank account in order to receive my monthly SSDI benefit.
Upon further reading, I think OP is talking about SSI recipients who get their benefits added to their debit card.

(153,169 posts)if they have a debit card connected to a bank, why would it be hard to cash a paper check.....unless it's just a pain in the butt which is a valid complaint

(36,310 posts)Back when I first got on SSDI, I had such a card (a big whopping $16 a month!) and it would be reloaded once a month by the state. it wasn't connected to any bank and to fin out the balance, I called the number on the back of the card, entered my card number when prompted and I was told my available balance.

(153,169 posts)but......16 dollars a month NEVER makes sense! wtf, insulting

(7,809 posts)all government issued checks were cashed without accounts.
Many employers also have local bank accounts. The banks that hold those accounts cash their paychecks no matter what bank the paycheck is drawn from.

(10,849 posts)... you kind of have to charge for it
However they do have free money orders which was my point.

(1,648 posts)Under Donnie Jackoff tRUMP, the first stimulus was on a paper check. Then the 2nd stimulus was on a debit card.
But this latest one under Democratic Rule was direct deposited just like my Social Security payments. Funny how government starts working when Republicans/Frauds that make it fail are kicked out of control of it.

Retail Stores
Most retailers charge a fee to cash a check, though some stores may do it for free. Presumably, they hope youll spend some of that money while youre there. From their perspective, cashing checks is not the worst idea in the worldwhen youve got cash in your hand, youre more willing to spend. However, stores arent in the business of taking risks on bad checks, so dont expect it to work every time. Your odds are best if youre a regular customer, and the staff is familiar with you. Plan to endorse the check or sign it over to the store to get cash.
Some national stores will offer check-cashing services, but you can usually expect a fee of at least a few dollars. Kmart stores cash selected checks for $1 (or potentially less) if youre a member of the Shop Your Way program.6 Walmart cashes checks of $1,000 or less in their Money Centers for $4 (checks greater than $1,000 cost $8).7 Anecdotally, Walmart has also been known to sometimes cash checks for freeespecially government-issued checks (such as stimulus checks and tax refunds). Grocery stores are another option (typically around $4 or so), and they might even cash small personal checks.8 9 Ask about check-cashing at the customer service counter.

I used to work for a company that had about 90%+ African American employees (where I worked as a temp for 6 months until being hired by them), and I learned that they paid their employees with debit cards! There were crazy fees for just about everything! Basically robbery!
I asked the woman in HR if I could please just get paid by direct deposit, and she replied that many of the employees couldn't even get a bank account of any kind! So it was "easier" to pay everyone with the debit cards instead. Then I found another job within a couple weeks.
So now I know... several people can't even get a basic bank account.

(94,597 posts)The IRS is mailing paper stimulus checks when the agency cant make an electronic deposit. An FDIC survey in 2017 estimated that 25% of U.S. households are unbanked or underbanked.
If this describes you or someone you know, what can you do? Where can you cash your stimulus check if you dont already have a checking account?
You have several local options to cash your stimulus check without opening a bank account or prepaid debit card.
