Attention bookmakers, an Egyptian official promises Ever Given will be freed over the weekend!

Time to start taking bets and calculating the odds! I'll bet "no".

Cargo ship still stuck across Suez Canal, but Egyptian official says it will be freed over weekend

Mohab Mamish, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi's advisor on seaports and the former chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, told the AFP news agency on Thursday that navigation through the canal "will resume again within 48-72 hours, maximum."

Gonna scuttle it? soothsayer Mar 2021 #1
They can't. The canal is too narrow and too shallow. Ritabert Mar 2021 #2

Passage through the canal is more complicated. Like tonight's Florida Derby

CNN reports that they’ve dredged 706,000 cubic feet of sand from under the ship, the rudders and screws are working, 9000 tons of ballast water have been jettisoned, and they have the most powerful ocean tugs available tied to her. When the tide rises enough to lift the ship even an inch off the bottom, they’ll just nail the gas on those tugs and...out she’ll come.

But I'll admit, they still have an hour and a half.

About the logistics of the whole thing. He said that the forward third of the hull was on sand and that the removal needed to be done in a methodical fashion to keep the whole thing from rolling over or breaking the hull.

What a mess.
