It's not only a more transmissible variant, but a more deadly one.
By Susie Madrak
CNN's John Avlon talked about the newest coronavirus surge, and how it's affecting young people this time.
"New cases are on the rise in 27 states. In Michigan, they've seen an increase of more than 50% since last week alone. The state's lead health officials says Michigan is in the throes of a new surge and cases are increasing the most with younger people. Miguel Marquez is live in Detroit," Avlon said.
"Look, this is the race between the variants and the vaccines. What they are concerned about is not only a more transmissible variant, which you're already seeing, but a more deadly one. They're seeing cases here in Michigan and in other states rise mostly among young people. Here in Michigan, it's the 10 to 19 cohort where they're seeing the numbers rise the most. They say it's a community spread and they're trying to do everything they can. Fears growing across the country just as the new variant identified in the U.K. is becoming the dominant strain here in the U.S.," Marquez said.

people we are not out of the woods yet...........just because vaccines are rolling out in large numbers and people are getting the shots doesn't mean it's over.......the human race truly is stupid ....

(8,059 posts)Some states have. Maybe allot the first half of the day's appointments for people over 50/health conditions, then everyone else in the afternoon? Many younger adults would love to have the vaccine but have grown impatient and are starting to resume their lives. My son is one of them, he's been really careful and is a conscientious mask-wearer, but he's starting to go out to restaurants again for dates, etc. His coworkers have all given up on wearing masks at work a long time ago, so that puts him in danger every day. Almost none of them are vaccinated, most are 20's-30's.

(9,952 posts)but turned it down because others who would not doing remote work and school could go in front of him. Told him, get the damn shot. A year of grueling work/school and stuck in an apartment has been hard on them. Young people need the shot too.

(20,880 posts)70 % of new cases are them, and we've vaccinated 70 percent of the 65+. So let's open up and watch what we all know will happen.
By May 15th there is going to be so much vaccine Scrooge McDuck could swim in it. Why the * are we opening up now with only one generation vaccinated and only 1/3 of society. It's generational genocide and no one seems to care.
People shout at me get vaccinated and I'm like, I can't even sign up until mid-April. To get vaccinated I have to lie or get really lucky right now.

(8,059 posts)I wish they would keep mask mandates, crowd restrictions, etc., until maybe May. Just another month, another six weeks, would make a big difference. But beyond that, I had an eye-opening experience at the Walmart when I got my first shot last week (I'm 51): Lots of cancelled appointments and no-shows. They were offering to set instant appointments for a couple of interested middle-aged shoppers so that someone could take the cancelled time slots.

(20,880 posts)The boomer bosses are now all vaccinated and they're pushing people to jump queues to get shots or just come in. It's total chaos. I'm 49.5 years old. I still can't queue up for a little over two weeks. Like I said, a lot of people I know are jumping the queue.

(8,059 posts)still have to go to work (not everyone works from home!), still maybe have kids to raise, too old for the protective health effects of youth, probably some pre-existing conditions, but too young to easily access the vaccine. I snagged a vaccine appointment online fairly easily, maybe due to sheer luck, but I live in an area that seems to have somewhat low interest in the vaccine and also has a lot of mask/crowd noncompliance. I guess those aspects go hand in hand.

Honestly, in the next six weeks everyone who wants a jab should be able to get one

(20,880 posts)But people are panicking now. We're a society that hoarded toilet paper at the start of this. Was there any doubt we'd see queue jumping?
Me, I'm waiting until my queue starts.

(23,147 posts)Hope they can get them quickly. They've all had Covid, but my daughter had it last year so the antibodies could be gone by now. She's a restaurant manager in a state where the mask mandate is gone at the end of this week! Her company isn't removing their mask requirement, but that just mean more fights she gets dragged into - this is FL after all. So anyway, hopeful that within a few weeks, the entire family has been vaccinated and we can have a bbq!

(81,568 posts)One dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines was 80% effective in preventing Covid in CDC study of health workers

A single dose of Pfizer or Modernas Covid-19 vaccines was 80% effective in preventing coronavirus infections, according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study of vaccinated health-care workers.
The effectiveness of partial immunization was seen two weeks after the first dose, according to the CDC, which looked at nearly 4,000 health care personnel, first responders and frontline workers between Dec. 14 and March 13. The health care workers in the study, which was published Monday, had no previous laboratory documentation of Covid-19 infection.
Two doses are better than one, federal health officials said, adding that the vaccines effectiveness jumped to 90% two weeks after the second dose.
These findings indicate that authorized mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are effective for preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection, regardless of symptom status, among working-age adults in real-world conditions, the U.S. agency wrote in the study. COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for all eligible persons.

(10,839 posts)That the variants were, in fact, striking younger patients, specifically children. That was a huge red flag.
The morons who want to diss the virus and all the mitigations are about to have a huge wake-up call if American children start getting infected and dying. The dumbest messaging I read was when GOPers tried to sell the line that the elderly should be willing to sacrifice themselves on the altar of capitalism. I sometimes wonder if these people even listen to themselves. But . . .
A virus threatening to attack our children, our future generations is a totally different ballgame. It's time for the COVID deniers to wakeup before their kids are sacrificed to their own stubborn ignorance.
The Biden Administration is doing its very best in the vaccine rollout. Last Friday, 3.5 million Americans received injections. But even Joe said he needs the support of the American public to defeat the pandemic. Which means, of course, following the protocols. There's a reason the head of the CDC said this morning that she's heartened by the success of the vaccine program yet still has a overwhelming sense of doom. The doctors are watching the data, the rise of infection and the irresponsibility of a large sector of the American populace.
And now the virus variants are after our kids. We're in a life or death race against time because the virus doesn't give shit about political preferences. Its driver is simple--finding a host where it can replicate.
COVID deniers, anti-vaxxers and the crazies are making the virus's job much, much easier.
