Lansing — Michigan Senate Republicans unveiled 39 wide-ranging bills Wednesday to alter state election laws, targeting areas like absentee ballots and voter qualifications that were the focus of former President Donald Trump's campaign to overturn his 2020 defeat.

The proposals debuted 141 days after the Nov. 3 election, which prompted Trump's supporters to make unproven and false claims of fraud. The GOP incumbent lost Michigan by 3 percentage points or 154,000 votes, but the effort among some Republicans to discredit the outcome continues.

Senate Republicans contend that their new bills would ensure integrity and "restore trust" in the voting process. But Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich, D-Flint, said the plan was "nothing more than an extension of lies and deceit about the last election."

"Our elections are fair and safe and that has been the case under Republican administrations and Democratic administrations," Ananich said. "The fact that Republicans didn’t win as many races as they wanted to does not justify their attempt to silence voters."

10. Yes. And they're unconstitutional. We passed a Voting Rights Prop in 2018 by a 2/3 majority

Michigan allows for indirect statute initiatives. Essentially, if they can get enough signatures, a proposal is sent to the state legislature for approval. If approved, it becomes law and the Governor cannot veto it. If its not approved, it goes onto the ballot during the next general election where voters can approve it or deny it. They are already planning this. Further, there are already groups organizing an Amendment initiative to codify some of this proposals into the State Constitution.

15. They don't need to get it on the ballot

If they get enough signatures for the proposal, it goes directly to the state legislature for a vote. If it passes the legislature it becomes law. If it fails it goes on the ballot. If they want to make changes, they can modify it and both the original version and the modified version goes on the ballot. The Governor has no control over this process as it bypasses her. She cannot veto legislation passed by initiative. Right now they need a little over 340k signatures on the proposal to get it before the legislature for a vote.

8. What a waste of time & our tax dollars. Between a Democratic governor & codifying voting

rights into the Michigan State Constitution in 2018 these bills are nothing more than pathetic, vile grandstanding. Instead of bettering the lives of us Michiganders, this is what the MIGQP chooses to spend its time on. And they wonder why they lost the Statehouse, MI Supreme Court, the Attorney General & Secretary of State offices, lost their supermajority in the MI Senate, and lost seats in the State House.

Between these stunts and the Independent Redistricting Commission ungerrymandering the state, they are in very real jeopardy of becoming the minority in the legislature, too. Keep showing us who you are.

We will remember.
