https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/man-arrested-nyc-attack-65-year-old-asian-woman-n1262573

An arrest was made early Wednesday in a brutal attack on a 65-year-old Asian woman that drew widespread outrage after footage of the assault was released.

New York City police identified the suspect as Brandon Elliot, 38, who was charged with two counts of assault as a hate crime and one count each of attempted assault as a hate crime, assault and attempted assault.

He was already on lifetime parole for fatally stabbing his mother in 2002
, authorities said. He was freed from prison in November 2019, according to police. No other details about the murder were released.

Two workers inside the building who appeared to be security guards were seen on surveillance video witnessing the attack but failing to come to the woman’s aid. One of them was seen closing the building door as the woman was on the ground. The attacker was able to casually walk away while onlookers watched, the video showed.

The building’s management company said they were suspended pending an investigation. The workers’ union said they called for help immediately.

... mental health facilities.

The Sheriff of Harris County (Houston) built a new jail and included a large mental health facility because he realized he had no proper way to deal with the mentally ill in his jails.

Somewhere I read that the first contact with treatment for 80% of those arrested and recognized as having mental issues is in a criminal corrections situation. Cops should not the first contact for the ill.

As mentally ill? I haven't seen that reported but also haven't read much about him yet.

As has been pointed out in other crimes, some people are just evil; most mentally ill are not extremely violent.

... anti-social and sociopathic behaviors are not sane. They're not behaviors we should ignore until they become criminal and/or deadly.

Stabbing one's mother is abhorrent and aberrant behavior. How does 20 years in prison address this? The system knew he was capable of something horrible - life parole. He was a ticking time bomb.

I haven't seen any details of his case or his behavior in prison.

It could be he was a model inmate and was granted parole, especially if there were any mitigating circumstances to his case.

Or the parole board f'd up and let a sociopath back on the streets.

I wonder if the cops will say he had a bad day? Oh wait... This horrible human needs to be kept away from society. He is a ticking time bomb. It's always amazing to me that someone who has likely faced bigotry and discrimination turns around and does the same to others. Then again, maybe it shouldn't be so surprising. This is why you don't put a bigot in power. They provide an excuse, or the fuel for someone just waiting to snap on some innocent person.

The authorities are actually calling it a hate crime, right from the get-go. I know that New York isn't Georgia and different jurisdictions and localities will view events differently, but it struck me as odd that while gunning down eight persons, the Georgia killer was having a bad day according to the authorities. The New York assailant is a hate crimer. Which makes me wonder if the Georgia killer's Whiteness or the New York assailant's Blackness had anything to do with it, as well?
