Alabama State Rep. Jeremy Gray introduced a bill that would allow yoga to be practiced voluntarily at public schools. But the state legislature upheld the ban against yoga, which has been strictly prohibited since 1993. If you are wondering why, the answer is "Alabama." It is, of course, the only state in the country that bans yoga.
The text of the ban says "school personnel shall be prohibited from using any techniques that involve the induction of hypnotic states, guided imagery, meditation or yoga" and additionally banned the use of the word "namaste."
At issue is whether the practice of yoga promotes Hinduism a claim several conservative Christian groups say is a problem.
Because yoga is rooted in Hinduism, Eric Johnston, a legal adviser for the Alabama Citizens Action Program, told The New York Times, "it does not need to be taught to small children in public schools."
"If this bill passes, then instructors will be able to come into classrooms as young as kindergarten and bring these children through guided imagery, which is a spiritual exercise, and it's outside their parents' view. And we just believe that this is not appropriate," Betsy Garrison of the Eagle Forum of Alabama, argued in session.

(19,204 posts)Good lord, they're serious about this, aren't they? I know a few people from Tennessee that grow some of the finest weed on the planet. The bad part is, I cant partake in it's medicinal properties because I go to a federally regulated pain management clinic for some back issues.
Give all of them a nice, big, sticky, Indica bud and they'll mellow out. Sounds like the republicans down there could use a little loosening up.

(19,204 posts)I couldn't live in an environment like that. It's such a beautiful place. Why do people allow assholes to run it? I'll take a wild guess and say it has something to do with gerrymandering and voter suppression.

I've never felt a need to be "saved" or forgiven for being born.

(326 posts)is that something that's taught in AL? And what if someone decided to convert to Hinduism while doing the downward facing dog pose, what law does that violate?

Next up for the Alabama lege, a bill prohibiting the use of Arabic numbers. I think I'm just kidding.

Next they'll ban classes which teach mindfulness because it's too dangerous having kids think.

I hear Alabama now wants to ban reruns of the old Kung Fu series, because its state legislators fear late night viewers might convert to Shao Lin, and instead of speaking in Porky Pig and Daffy Duck tongues in church, their elders will now recite Confucius in the original Mandarin.

Prominent pandemic deniers include a number of keen yoga practitioners, such as alternative health proponent Sayer Ji, who runs the website greenmedinfo.com, and his wife Kelly Brogan, who describes herself as a holistic psychiatrist. More recently, the links between yoga and conspiracy theories came to public attention after the QAnon shaman who stormed the Capitol on January 6, was revealed to be a yoga practitioner who is reportedly on an organic diet.
Its hard to tell just how much conspiracy theories have infiltrated the wellness and yoga space. Researchers have tried to document the recent revival of conspirituality the intersection of yoga, spirituality and holistic health with conspiracy theories. The Conspirituality podcast, co-founded by cult survivor and yoga teacher Matthew Remski, lists figures in the wellness industry who have shared conspiracy theories and aims at exposing faux-progressive wellness utopianism.
