Oil in new Gulf slick matches that of 2010 spill

The oil in a slick detected in the Gulf of Mexico last month matched oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill two years ago, the Coast Guard said Wednesday night, ending one mystery and creating another.

“The exact source of the oil is unclear at this time but could be residual oil associated with the wreckage or debris left on the seabed from the Deepwater Horizon incident,” the Coast Guard said.

The sheen, located about 50 miles off Louisiana’s shore in the Mississippi Canyon block 252 where the Macondo well was drilled, was detected in satellite images taken on Sept. 9 and Sept. 14. The Coast Guard said the size of the sheen has varied with weather conditions.

...there have been persistent rumors and allegations on blogs that Macondo is not truly dead, and that it is continuing to spew oil into the gulf.

Coast Guard approves plan by BP and Transocean to identify source of sheen at site of Deepwater Horizon disaster

The U.S. Coast Guard announced Friday night that it approved a joint plan from BP and Transocean to identify the source of a sheen in the Gulf of Mexico that testing has indicated was from oil that originated from BP's failed Macondo 252 well. The plan includes satellite observations and mobilizing remotely operated vehicles to examine the original Macondo well area, including the wreckage, debris and the riser piping that now lies on the sea floor, the Coast Guard news release said.

possible methane gas leaks. Believed to be the result of fracking in Texas. Geologically active area all of a sudden.

The Macondo Well's condition anyone's guess. Remember all those cracks and bubbles leaking from beneath the ocean floor? No reason to think they aren't still doing so.

Someone should be out there investigating.

I remember reports of black sludge washing up on shores that had been cleaned from Mississippi and Louisiana. It ain't gone.

mixed with co-rexit and long buried in the sand only to wash ashore again.

I bet you anything that well is still leaking along the crack in the sea floor that they made when they drilled.
