Somebody told me yesterday that they hated to see the grey come back, I'm like WTF!...the evergreen belt has wilted from this drought and some want more sun?

10. Eight years on Prince William Sound, now five on Puget Sound...

We might be getting six to eight inches of it by Monday (oops...hauling out the sandbags).

I'm afraid it's too late for our Cedar groves.

6. i've noticed many cedar trees that looked way too dry.

and some of the fall color is not really that but dry crispy leaves.
we need enough water to get the ground wet.

9. We've got five baby plum trees, half dead now...

I am so friggin' tired of lugging water out to them, we only planted them two years ago and they were already showing signs of hurting by the beginning of August. Now, they look fried, only just a few live leaves left on them.

Every one of the cedars in the woods behind us are sagging, with major brown boughs just hanging, waiting to fall with the wind. Everywhere I go, I notice the brown on the cedars.

It is pouring up here right now, has been all evening! Yippee!

11. we got rain this morning.

nothing but drizzle yesterday and last night.
i love the sound of the rain on the roof.
i have had trouble keeping trees wet this year too. we have 80+ (bonsai) trees in pots and some of them need watering every day.
it was fine during the summer but since school started again (and the days growing shorter) i have not had the time to play with trees every day.
sorry to hear about your plums. they should be fine by spring but will probably need some pruning to clean the weak and fried branches from the trees.
the forest is another question. i think the western red cedar has had a number of bad years. once the foliage goes brown those trees will not come back.

13. I meant in Western Washington, collectively...

and particularly, up here in the North Sound area. I'm in the foothills of the North Cascades and every cedar I see now has extensive browning, with pronounced sagging limbs...they are looking sickly, to put it mildly.

15. the cedars look like that in the south sound and on the kitsap peninsula too.

my mother told me the other day, in e-mail, that she noticed rhododendron that looked like they were dying. they are hardy and should not die in washington weather.
the fire hazard is bad too. the rain will help thwart that threat.

Can't wait to go get basketfuls of chanterelles, lobster mushrooms, saffron milkcaps and whatever other tasties pop up now!
