Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) continued his harsh criticism of the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling this week, calling it the bench's "worst decision ever."
They said money is free speech. Since when is money free speech? McCain asked a crowd at an event put on by the Oxford Union at the University of Oxford, according to the Oxonian Globalist. Money is money.
The Supreme Court's 2010 ruling, which allowed corporations, unions and individuals to pour unlimited amounts of money into elections through super PACs, has elicited a strong responses from McCain in the past. Earlier this year he predicted that the unfettered influx of money, often from undisclosed sources, would lead to "huge scandals" in upcoming elections.
McCain has traditionally been one of Congress' most enthusiastic supporters of campaign finance reform, and he lamented the demise of such efforts in the wake of the Citizens United decision. At times, he's appeared to act as if he's willing to accept defeat.

(657 posts)After PBO wins I hope everyone agrees to get rid of this. Unfortunately if they win they will credit it to this and it will be worse than ever. For this reason of many Americans should really be thinking about this election more than just a sporting event.

(2,514 posts)assuming a Carmona win... that would pretty much give the seat to the Democrats.. how sweet would that be, going from 2 Republican Senators to 2 Democrats in successive vacancys... as it is Demographics will change Arizona, just as sure as it has New Mexico, my blue state..

His breath became labored and short as his skin turned clammy.
A bead of sweat broke out across his furrowed brow.
A dark shadow clouded his eyes, and an icy chill made him shudder until it passed after a few moments.
Ann Romney, fingering the keys of safety deposit boxes from various foreign banks around the world as she apprised her husband's physical discomfiture, finally asked, "Mitt, are you all right?"
Mitt answered in a guttural groan, "Someone, somewhere...said...said a...a very bad thing about...MONEY!!!!"

(34,845 posts)Is someone going to set a limit on how much money one can donate?
Are we going to say that only individuals can donate? That would leave a lot of small businesses out in the cold.
Plus, bigger corporations would only shuttle their money into something like 'Tier 2' salaries or some other nonsense.
If someone has a good idea for how to overturn Citizens United, I'd be happy to hear it but I think the cat's out of the bag now.
