Jimmy Savile is today lying in an unmarked grave after a dead-of-night operation to remove his £4,000 headstone at the request of his family.
Undertakers worked in the dark to rip out the giant memorial and have said it will 'be broken up, placed in a skip and used as landfill'.
The gates of Woodlands Cemetery in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, were locked at around 11pm last night and police stood guard for the two-hour operation.
His loved-ones did not attend and while they had ordered the removal of the grave they were not aware of the undertakers decision to do it in the middle of the night.
They were to wait until 7am today before removing the six foot wide by four foot tall headstone with Saviles now inflammatory epitaph: 'It was good while it lasted.'
All its inscriptions will be ground away before the stone is destroyed.
Below it is Savile's body, encased in concrete at a 45 degree angle, so he could 'see' the sea and Scarborough castle - his dying wish.
The Savile family said in a statement: 'Members of the family of Sir Jimmy Savile have decided to remove his headstone from the grave in Scarborough.
'The family members are deeply aware of the impact that the stone remaining there could have on the dignity and sanctity of the cemetery.

Police investigating the alleged sexual abuse of girls by the late Sir Jimmy Savile are pursuing 120 separate lines of inquiry, Scotland Yard has said.
Police said they had recorded eight allegations against him, including two rapes, and there could be 30 victims.
Separately, his headstone will be removed from his grave in Scarborough after his family expressed concerns.
Meanwhile, Freddie Starr has denied claims he groped a 14-year-old girl in a BBC dressing room with Savile.
The comedian said he would welcome the opportunity to speak to police about the claims.
Earlier, police said the probe into the Jimmy Savile abuse allegations would be a joint inquiry with children's charity the NSPCC and would be named Operation Yewtree.
Savile's headstone is inscribed with verses composed by a family friend
During a press briefing at the Metropolitan Police headquarters in London, police said the alleged victims were mainly girls who were aged between 13 and 16 at the time, and the allegations spanned four decades.
"At this stage it is quite clear from what women are telling us that Savile was a predatory sex offender," said Commander Peter Spindler, head of specialist crime investigations, in an interview with the BBC.
"It's vital that those who have been victims of that actually get the recognition and acknowledgement and support that they deserve."
Cdr Spindler said that of the eight criminal allegations, six were alleged indecent assaults on teenage girls.
He said Savile's pattern of offending behaviour appeared to be on "a national scale" and he had a "predilection for teenage girls".

What will be interesting is watching the media - many of whom have admitted 'knowing' about Saville 30+ years ago - spin their own complicity.
Saville is past retribution; his reputation may go down the toilet, but he can't be tried for any crimes. The journos and media types that gave all this a wink and a nod - and are still living - have some explaining to do.

If Saville was as guilty as everyone seems to think (and, for the record, I'm neither defending nor condemning - that's what the investigation is for), they might have stopped him before his abuses became legion.
Failure to act could be construed as complicity.
I find it bizarre that so much stuff is being brought to light now. Why not when he was alive when justice might have been done?
And some of the people making accusations are very hypocritical. If it was such an open secret then why didn't the likes of the Daily Fail expose it back then rather then using it as a cheap stick to beat the BBC with now?
As it stands, with Savile dead the chances of any justice being done here are zero.

The BBC has already announced two investigations into the Savile scandal and now the Department of Health is to probe how he became head of a taskforce overseeing the Broadmoor Hospital in 1988.
"In hindsight he should very obviously not have been appointed. Had anyone involved in the appointment been aware of allegations of abuse against Savile, we would not have expected him to have been appointed," it said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the University of Bedfordshire announced it had stripped the late performer of an honorary degree awarded for his charity work.
"It was given in good faith in 2009 without the knowledge of the current very serious allegations. In this light, the University of Bedfordshire has confirmed that the honorary award should be rescinded," the university said in an e-mailed statement.
Chief Executive of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (Ceop) agency, which is assessing the scale of the claims against Savile, told Channel 4 News there could be an investigation into the police response to the scandal "if that's where the information leads us".

I wouldn't be surprised if Savile had "friends" in the Church.
This is very similar to the Jerry Sandusky case. I think Sandusky is protecting other child rapists.
