ATLANTA (The Borowitz Report)In the latest blow to Governor Brian Kemp, the city of Atlanta announced that it would be leaving the state of Georgia to protest its discriminatory new voting law.
In a press conference on Monday, Atlanta revealed that it will be relocating its sports teams, hospitality industry, and entire 136.8 square miles of land to another state yet to be determined.
Kemp attempted to put a brave face on the situation, even though the departure of the state capital means that he no longer has an office in the state that he governs.
If Atlanta thinks I cant get the business of Georgia done without it, then Atlanta is gravely mistaken, Kemp, speaking from his room at the Quality Inn in Jesup, said.
News of Atlantas decision touched off a bidding frenzy among states eager to host it, but the city indicated that it was only interested in moving to a state that makes it easy for its citizens to vote.
Were taking offers from Oregon and Washington State very seriously, Atlanta said. We let the call from Texas go straight to voice mail.

If I recall correctly, it's not just Atlanta that's blue....so are Columbus, Athens, Savannah, Macon, and Augusta (basically, all the nice places!)
And he still has Stacey Abrams to deal with!

(112,252 posts)It probably doesn't help attendance at the AA meetings if the police show up.

(205,552 posts)And the meeting where the mask wearing controversy erupted was a women's meeting. My friend and I decided to skip that one for awhile. The other meeting where I encountered controversy is very small, usually 5-6, since many people now are attending Zoom meetings. And discussing politics is not generally accepted, but of course these days it does come up - either before or after when people are apt to talk. I was very pleased to let the few others know when I'd gotten my first vaccine shot, but one of the others had to remark he "didn't trust it," while the one member I'd be worried about is a long timer and well respected. He's got to be in his mid 80s and has been in the rooms since 1976. But he told me that his daughter is a nurse at the hospital and she isn't getting the vaccine and he gets his medical advice from her.

(205,552 posts)And since this one meeting still being held is so small that there's no room for controversy - 6 regular members and maybe 2 or 3 occasional. At the last one, one regular has moved away and another we learned is in the hospital so it was down to 4, plenty of room for distancing!
But the one I worry about is the older gentleman who doesn't plan to get vaccinated because of his nurse daughter's advice. He's got a lot of wisdom, got sober in 1976, and back before the pandemic he showed up at the beginners' meeting I'm GSR for, went through the entire 12 and 12 book, including the Traditions, which took many weeks and I was very grateful since so many there weren't at all familiar and he kept their attention with his colorful stories. He's got to be mid 80s and he and I share a sobriety date - April 30th - except a different year, LOL. He's always been nice to me, called me "a trusted servant" and I value his experience (strength and hope), so I just hope he's still around to continue inspiring the rest of us.

(43,184 posts)They moved out from Turner Field, in the heart of the city, which was a stadium that was barely 20 years old and still in excellent condition, out to Cobb County to the suburbs.
Some people saw it as pandering to their white fans who felt uncomfortable going into the city.
So I dont feel all that bad about them losing the All Star Game.
