Almost all of New York's House Democrats draw a hard line on state and local tax deductions

Nearly every Democrat in New York’s House delegation said Tuesday that they won’t back tax hikes to fund President Joe Biden's infrastructure package without a full repeal of the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions.

That powerful bloc, representing 17 out of 19 Democrats in the delegation, sent a letter to House leaders to outline their position on the issue, known as SALT, as negotiations intensified across Washington this week on Biden’s next major legislative priority.

“We stand ready to work with you on this critical issue, and we will not hesitate to oppose any tax legislation that does not fully restore the SALT deduction,” the New Yorkers' letter, led by Reps. Jerry Nadler and Tom Suozzi, reads.

Every Empire State House Democrat except Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Kathleen Rice signed the letter, a copy of which was obtained by POLITICO.

A letter sent to Biden’s Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Thursday by eight members of Congress — including six from New Jersey — calls for a repeal of the cap on the federal write-off for state and local taxes known as SALT to be added to Biden’s broader tax and infrastructure proposals.

The members of the New Jersey delegation who signed the letter are: Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-5th), Bill Pascrell (D-9th), Mikie Sherrill (D-11th), Tom Malinowski (D-7th), Frank Pallone (D-6th) and Albio Sires (D-8th).

“We could not vote for a bill that has a meaningful tax impact on our constituents unless it restores SALT deduction relief to our middle-class families,” the letter said.

Funny how the most progressive (AOC) and most conservative (Rice) of the delegation opposed it.

All politics are local, and the taxes on middle class property owners in blue states are already high enough.

the middle and even upper middle class - while removing the deduction for the 1 percent.

The suburbs are increasingly turning blue, and to win elections we need those voters, who need the SALT deductions as property taxes are often very high.

Repubs/Trump are the ones who worked to eliminate SALT - because they want people to vote for the lower tax approach and hurt Dems and blue states.
