U.S. Chamber opposes Democratic voting rights bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Chamber of Commerce said on Tuesday it strongly opposes a Democratic-backed bill that is aimed at rewriting U.S. voting law, saying it would punish corporations and associations that engage in political advocacy.

Democrats say the bill, which updates voting procedures and requires states to turn over the redrawing of congressional district lines to independent commissions, is needed to overcome Republican efforts to make voting across the country harder.

Many Republican-controlled state legislatures are exploring steps that voting-rights advocates say would reduce turnout after record-setting participation in the November 2020 general election.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce said it wants more people brought into the political process but that the bill would have “precisely the opposite effect – pushing certain voices, representing large segments of the electorate and U.S. economy, out of the political process altogether.”

for the sole purpose of inviting the local chamber of commerce to the ribbon cutting ceremony and then telling them they can fuck right off. I don't even care if anything becomes of the business, or if it ever opens. It would be worth the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent.

My in-laws live in Hilton Head, SC. When we visit them, it is not uncommon for us go on an outing to Savannah, GA. While there, the four of us might visit the sights, eat at a restaurant, or do some shopping.
I am writing to inform you that, with the passage and signing into law of SB 202, I will be doing everything in my power not to spend one single dime in Georgia until the current Republican elected officials are voted out of office and significant steps are taken to overturn Georgia’s pattern of racist voter suppression. I strongly suspect I am by no means the only person who feels this way.
Specifically, I will:
1) Encourage my in-laws to visit me in (Blue) Virginia instead of going to visit them.
2) Encourage my in-laws to stay local to the Hilton Head area for dining and shopping, both while we are there visiting and when we are not.
3) If I do end up in Savannah, bringing with me (as much as possible) food and drink to avoid having to buy any in Georgia and not purchasing anything from any of the shops in Georgia (with the possible exception if I see something I really love at a black owned business).
4) Fortunately, I no longer need to fly into Savannah to visit my in-laws!
Yes, I realize that the Chamber of Commerce is not the government, is a non-partisan entity, and/or is not a political entity. With all due respect, the majority of Chamber of Commerce members are Republicans, the Chamber historically tends to support Republicans, and it is almost certain that the Chamber’s members have donated to Republican candidates. If you want me, and others who are prepared to boycott Georgia over this travesty of a bill, to change my mind, I suggest you start working now to oust the current extremist administration and do everything you can to make sure that the next administration and legislature supports the democratic right of all American citizens to vote.
Should SB 202 (or parts of it) be overturned based on legal challenges, that will not be sufficient to change my mind. The current anti-democratic and corrupt elected officials need to be removed from office before I will be willing to voluntarily spend money in Georgia.
