If you are shocked about 6 women getting blood clots from the 7 million people who took the J & J vaccine, wait till I tell you about how many people died who didnt get a vaccine at all.

(83,898 posts)They cancelled the shot.
Sigh. We, sister and I do 24/7 home care. Granted she is low risk since she hasn't left the house in a year and a half. However we have brought Hospice back to help us and that is a risk.

(7,715 posts)That is awful that they cancelled on your mom without giving these alternatives. If you can, please scream holy hell. This is exceptionally unfair.

Thanks, MerryHolidays.

(7,715 posts)I got J&J several weeks ago. It is PRECISELY because your mom is 94 that she should be getting whatever they have on hand (and I am sure that somewhere they have something on hand).
Best of luck, SS2! Squeaky wheels and all that....

(83,898 posts)One and done. There are only so many volunteers out there to do this. There is no way we can get her anywhere for a shot.
My niece, an ICU nurse, volunteers her time to give shots at clinics. In the beginning of the pandemic she was working 18 hour shifts. I don't know how she did it. Under trump, no proper protective gear. None.

(7,715 posts)I was whacked with real fatigue for a few days, but it's over...one-and-done. That was the real appeal for J&J for me, and it's a shame that the suspension happened. I hope it will end quickly.
I hadn't appreciated the mobility issues with your mom. Under those circumstances, the single shot is even more important for her than it was for someone like me. Not knowing where you live, are there any medical outcall services that do home visits in your area that can administer the shot(s)? Take a look at this to see if there are other options in your area than ones you've already considered: https://vaccinefinder.org/search/
You probably are aware of all of this, but here's some stuff to consider:

This is stuff I am sure you know, so apologies if this is a time-waster. Perhaps ever reach out to your state and federal reps and senators (assuming they're blue!) to assist in this.
I hope it all goes well for your mom.

(83,898 posts)Don't apologize for being kind and caring.
We have hospice. The shot is through our local elderly service. Home bound have not been a state priority because they are safer. We stopped all incoming care from Hospice last April. We picked them back up recently because we needed the help. They said they will let us know in a week or two.
Thank you. You are a good person.

(21,607 posts)probably safe for her age demographic. The age range of vulnerability seems to end at people in their 40s. But I can see why the company and governments do not want to take risks now that they know what can happen.
I heard that places that were using J&J have agreed to substitute Pfizer or Moderna for those who already had appointments for J&J. I think it is now a matter of getting one or the other substitute sent to the vaccination sites.
Hope you can get the substitute for her soon. And please give your niece a huge hug and thank you from me for her dedication.

(2,636 posts)Wait and see what? Whether they catch covid?
6/7,000,000 = .0000008, or .00008%
These people fear the virus so they minimize and dismiss almost 600,000 deaths, but are hair on fire alarmed about a .00008% incidence of rare blood clots (all women, so this shouldn't really scare all those Evangelical Republican men who are giant babies)

(30,763 posts)My husband and I are both vaccinated and fully immune. We are starting to go out a bit, with masks and proper social distancing.
We went to pick up our taxes today. We have them done for us by a local tax person. Our income is complicated by farm income and retirement income. It pays to have a professional do this for us.
The lady who gave us our paperwork and made sure we signed everything was wearing a mask. When we got close to her, my husband assured her that we were vaccinated and safe. She informed us that she was not getting the vaccine, because she was "not sure" about it.
I felt insulted that she was there, working with the public. Mask or no mask, she is endangering herself and others.

(2,636 posts)Ask if she was sure about the polio vaccine, or the small pox vaccine, or the chicken pox vaccine....
Pfizer took zero dollars to develop their vaccine. They have an economic interest in maintaining their reputation. As does J& J and Astra Zeneca and Moderna.
She's not sure. She is a tax preparer. The FDA requires 3 to 4 phases of testing in clinical populations, and compounds do not move forward if data doesn't show safety and efficacy. Period.
No drugs are more thoroughly tested than vaccine precisely because they have to go into billions of people. Billions. This isn't viagra, or rogaine, or cardiovascular medicine, or treatment for non small cell lung cancer, or something that just a small percentage of the population has. It's novel. And fatal for almost 2% of those who get it. I've had it, a mild case, and I am still not 100%. I got vaccinated, too.
An accounting clerk isn't sure because why? DId she vaccinate her children? Did she have measles? Mumps? Rubella? Diphtheria? Yeah, I thought not.
Because Republican propagandists have told her to doubt the virus, the need for masks, and the vaccines) themselves for political gain. Coronavirus his Seattle, New York, SF and LA, Chicago and Detroit: major metropolitan centers with international airports home to racially and ethnically diverse populations. IOW, democrats, black people, and latinos.Kushner and TFG made a political calculation that it was killing off Democrats, and that they could blame democratic governors for its spread. Once the report was released showing COVID killed Blacks and Latinos at higher proportions, on APril 6,2020 it was settled. Whatever half assed efforts they made, they abandoned. We want things open by easter and rocking by summer. Because they are divorced from reality and psychopathic.
I'm counting on greed and insurance liability to make the vaxx mandatory once it's got full approval (non emergency use) and private business want to open safely. There are more of us than there are of them. FOMO and being left out and not permitted will hurt their big egos and their tiny brains.
THe people who won't vaccinate in the face of an airborne disease are the people who won't wear condoms and hope they don't spread that herpes or clamydia.

(4,619 posts)That would be one out in 7 million.
In Brazil the first wave infected 70% of the people I heard.
So let's do the odds.
One in 7 million, or 70% chance.
Take your pick.
Then there are the other vaccines.
And more coming.
And boosters coming.

(18,641 posts)There were snippets of maybe a dozen disclaimers from TV commercials where they mentioned that it could cause blood clots.
