In my 25 years as a reporter I have NEVER heard police in America actually say journalists will be arrested during a protests. But that happened in #BrooklynCenter last night. We stayed. The citizens are why we stay. I took this moments aft the announcement #DaunteWright

(963 posts)The system is so rotten that it can't be repaired. Even a well-intentioned rookie gets sucked into the corruption and becomes part of the problem. The police can no longer police themselves. The people they protect and serve are themselves.

(1,450 posts)It's almost like they are saying F*** you Biden, we are going to continue what Trump would want us to do,
Where the hell is the Justice Department? When are they going to step in to reign in these renegade insurrectionist police?

That ship sailed for good on 1/6. They want us gone by any means necessary and they won't stop until they are stopped.
We should have gotten that through our heads 20 years ago and we damn well better get it through now.

(2,403 posts)At some point if confrontation keeps getting pushed at you, you have to react. What that reaction is, how it plays out, and what the endgame for it is needs to be mapped out as beat it can before it begins though.
hadEnuf
(2,212 posts)That would be good for a start. It's reasonable to expect that everything from these punks will be confrontational. They have demonstrated this over and over again and for anyone to still hope for anything less would be beyond naive.
Federal, state and local agencies need to be purged of the 5th column of these seditious right wingers wherever possible. We are also dealing with violently criminal Trump supporters and only zero tolerance should be practiced with that scum.
This sort only understands power and anything less is a weakness to be exploited by them.
It's going to take some time to start fixing this but I just hope we do not lose momentum like we often have before.

(4 posts)I live in one of the effected counties. The text message sent out from the Governor clearly said not to travel during curfew times unless, "you are going to/from work and have ID, are a reporter, are law enforcement or a first responder." I think people should calm down. I'd be the first to defend the rights of the media to report. There are good reasons to be outraged, I don't believe this is one. Save your powder. We have a LOT of work ahead.

(10,274 posts)Social workers need to be out on the streets, and most cops need to stay in their stations unless specifically called by the social worker on the scene.
Policing services need to be very tightly regulated by an elected citizen board in every city that maintains a police department.
Police officers need to have ten years answering calls from the on scene social workers WITHOUT AN INCIDENT before they're trusted to carry a gun and write traffic tickets.
Both of these professions need to be paid more, SCREENED MORE, with tighter leashes held by the community they're supposed to serve. The hammer of state power in a legit democracy is entirely too destructive (as it rightly should be, mind you) to be laid in the hands of some toon that managed to do enough jumping jacks to make it through a Whole Year of police academy.
But, this thread is about the press. Very obviously, the local cops dont want anyone taking any videos of them misbehaving...or why would they care? Press and Designated Protest Zones didnt do fuck all during Jrs reign, and they learned that lesson.
'Journalists will be arrested' is a phrase that should rightly get someone fired immediately. And this is just my humble opinion, curfews are for fascists and the little bitches who support them...Papers Please regs in other form.

(5,275 posts)Just watched PBSs Frontline Special on the Far Right Nazi Types based around the January 6 events.
These far right Neo Nazi creeps are trouble and obviously have infiltrated the Police and our Military.
The extreme right Nazi types are all over, chants of Heil Hitler ringing out from some.
Joe better get serious about this, it is worrisome and terrifying. Those people are nuts and theyre armed to the teeth because of that Damn 2nd Amendment.
Im anxious about whats coming ahead.

So was Cuomo, who told her to move/leave. She wouldn't leave, basically refusing even though she had a ton of gas in her face and some of the crowd was pissed off at the media. She said "This is my community and I'm not leaving".
