WASHINGTON Newly vaccinated and armed with $1,400 stimulus checks, Americans went on a spending spree last month, buying new clothes and going out to eat again.
Retail sales surged a seasonally adjusted 9.8% after dropping about 3% the month before, the Commerce Department said Thursday.
The increase was the biggest since May of last year, when stores reopened after closing at the start of the pandemic. It was also much larger than the 5.5% increase Wall Street analysts had expected.

(2,543 posts)Shows the "marginal propensity to consume" still applies in the 21st century. And further proof that money in the hands of consumers is better than tax cuts for the wealthy.

(6,217 posts)Actually helping others isn't something they do. They're much more inclined to helping themselves, and the people/companies that bankroll their elections.
There is no way they wanted the Democrats to get the credit for a revived economy.
Ironically, if they got on board and made it truly bi-partisan, they would have been able to take credit for the restoration of the economy.
After all, even a majority of their base was in favor of the Covid Relief Bill.
Now the Democrats will get the credit, and the Republicans will be relegated to whining about government socialism. Pretty stupid on their part.
But in the final analysis, Republican politicians are just plain selfish; unable to see beyond their own narrowly perceived interests. They simply have their heads up their collective asses; not a good place to get a view of what is really going on, or what would be the best for the nation.

(57,073 posts)But my water heater decided this is the perfect time to screw up. Looking at tankless ones, but hard to find a high-efficency one with a warranty that will be honored if the unit not installed by a "licensed plumber." (Licensing in the not-so-great red hellhole of TN pretty much assures an excessively high bill, AND definitely screwed up results.)

(57,073 posts)My water heater decided to take a crap, so I'm looking for a tankless unit made by a company that will honor the warranty if not "professionally" installed. (A licensed plumber in TN would be a huge waste of money...)
