Daunte Wright Lawyer Shares Video of White Man Beating Cop With 'Not One Taser or Gun in Sight'
Ben Crump, a civil rights attorney representing the family of Daunte Wright, called out police for saying Wright's killing resulted from an "accidental discharge" by sharing a video clip of a white suspect beating officers and stealing their vehicle without the police even touching their Tasers or guns.
Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, officer Kim Potter, who worked for the police department for 26 years, during a traffic stop last Sunday. Body camera footage from the shooting suggests that Potter intended to deploy her Taser but instead fired her gun. Before the shooting, she can be heard yelling, "Taser! Taser! Taser!"
"This white man was resisting arrest, BEATING A COP with his own baton, and driving away in their police car, and there is not one taser or gun in sight... yet #DaunteWright was killed for a minor traffic violation. #TwoAmericas," Crump tweeted on Thursday. He shared the clip of the white suspect resisting arrest and escaping in a police vehicle.
An autopsy of Wright's body showed that he was shot once in the chest. Potter resigned this week and has been charged with second-degree manslaughter, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Protests have rocked Brooklyn Center and the surrounding areas in the wake of the shooting, with many angered that police described the killing as an accident.
