Police in Georgia released dashcam video on Thursday showing the events of a shooting earlier this week in which three officers were wounded after a suspect opened fire with an AK-47 during a chase.
Local news affiliate 11 Alive reported Wednesday that the video, released by the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, begins at a police traffic stop Monday that resulted from troopers stopping a car clocked at 111 mph on an interstate highway.
The car sped off from officers after being stopped, and a passenger in the vehicle opened fire on officers, disabling one patrol car, with the weapon after police attempted a maneuver to stop the fleeing vehicle. The chase continued and two others were struck by gunfire, including one officer who was struck in the head while driving and crashed his car into a pole; he was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he is reportedly recovering well.
Law enforcement officers from three agencies including the Carrolton Police Department, Villa Rica Police Department, and Carroll County Sheriff's office were involved in the chase.

(54,770 posts)there would be a lot less chance a traffic stop, or whatever, would end in a shootout.
Im sure some police are just looking for an excuse to shoot, but I suspect most would rather not approach every encounter as possibly hostile. Personally, any policeperson who doesnt support strong gun laws ought not to be carrying one.
Every year we do nothing, put at least 10 million more weapons on the streets that we will have to deal with sooner or later.

(82,849 posts)But with those firearms out there, they can use that as an excuse to treat every situation as if the suspect was so armed. You know, like a 13 year old boy who stops, turns around, and holds his empty hands in the air. If the cop is sufficiently worried that the kid has an AK 47, it's carte blanche to shoot first and ask questions later, if ever.

(7,217 posts)They already do! Doing it for years. Every stop - assume they are armed.
Because enough of them are.
Because of the overwhelming proliferation of arms in this country, to ignore that could mean their life.
Cant say I blame them.
The problem is GUNS! Too many and too often in the wrong hands. What I cant understand is why cops do not support serious gun control.
