(12,265 posts)These mass shootings tend to be young white males for some reason.

(12,265 posts)I wish they would just kill themselves and not take innocent people out with them.

(47,463 posts)Even men who come home and slaughter their entire families and then turn the gun on themselves. That sort of scenario has been around for decades. Now they have more deadly weapons, so they can kill more people, often indiscriminately before committing suicide.

(14,173 posts)They don't want to come down from the "high". And face the consequences. And be brought back to reality. A small kernel in the depths of his little mind KNOWS this was wrong, and he doesn't want it to ever have a bigger voice.
The fear of the possibility of regretting his actions later, having to face the loved ones of those he killed and the fear that he may just admit he did something awful......is more fearful than escaping by taking his own life before he has a chance to think about it any more.

(29,322 posts)Other countries have similar rates of mental illness but they don't have the same gun violence problem. Easy access to guns is the issue.

(29,322 posts)Keeping guns from them will help with the gun suicide rate but not so much when it comes to mass shootings.
Study(psychiatryonline.org) after study(www.sciencedirect.com) has demonstrated that people with mental health issues commit only a miniscule percentage of mass shootings and account for less than 1% of annual gun homicides. According to a study based on Swedish data published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, only 3%-5% of violent crimes are perpetrated by someone with a mental illness.(ajp.psychiatryonline.org) In fact, people with serious mental illnesses are more likely to be the victims of violence.(www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) And the vast majority of gun deaths in America are from suicide, meaning those with mental illness are far more likely to harm themselves than others.

(12,265 posts)these mass shooters are white males. But they will never say that in any of the reporting, it is just a young male. If he were Black it would say a young Black man in huge letters. Makes me crazy!

I'm also posting this because others in this thread have some inaccurate theories why people commit mass shootings.
The #1 problem is the easy access to guns.

(14,854 posts)It's almost always males doing this stuff, often the younger ones.
I looked up mass shooting statistics several years ago, and it was over 99% males who did it.

(63,912 posts)I've been looking at this problem since a family member died by gun violence. In her case, her killer was a family member, he was angry, he had been drinking and he had a gun in his nightstand for "protection."

(43,383 posts)except Generation Alpha (oldest of that cohort turned 8 this year, so too early, save for an accidental shooting if they get hold of an adult's gun, which has lickely already happened, ffs).
On edit, perhaps I am wrong, and there have been other Gen Z mass shooters, as the oldest Gen Z'ers are already 24.

(14,854 posts)My oldest brother said there was a kid named Harry Hole at his school, in the 60's.
Not surprised it was yet ANOTHER mass shooter who was male, regardless.
Edit: To clarify, that kind of name might make me suspect that his parents were abusive.

Cabrera added, A family member of the suspected shooter reached out to authorities warning about the suspects potential for violence, according to three law enforcement sources briefed on the matter.
Bob Segall, WTHR journalist, wrote, An IMPD police report states Brandon Hole was arrested on March 3, 2020, when police were dispatched to a far Eastside house (the same house police and ATF searched this morning following the FedEx shooting). The report says police seized shotgun from dangerous person.'

When asked if the shooter was an employee at the FedEx facility, Cook said that was not yet known. According to a job listing for a package handler at the facility, the shooting happened just before the shift change between the twilight sort, which starts at 5:30 p.m., and the midnight sort, which begins at 11:30 p.m.
