- Police scoured a Fedex facility in Indianapolis and searched the suspected gunman's home Friday looking for a motive for the latest mass shooting to rock the U.S., as family members of the eight victims spent agonizing hours awaiting word on their loved ones.

The shooter was identified as 19-year-old Brandon Scott Hole of Indiana, two law enforcement officials briefed on the matter told The Associated Press. The investigators searched a home in Indianapolis associated with Hole and seized evidence, including desktop computers and other electronic media, the officials said. The officials could not discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Indianapolis police said earlier that they had not yet discovered the gunman's motive for opening fire with a rifle late Thursday night at a FedEx processing center near the Indianapolis airport.

Indianapolis Deputy Police Chief Craig McCartt said the gunman started randomly shooting at people in the parking lot and then went into the building and continued firing. He said the shooter apparently died by suicide shortly before police entered the building.

"There was no confrontation with anyone that was there," he said. "There was no disturbance, there was no argument. He just appeared to randomly start shooting."

So here is a nice Wikipedia on IN gun law.

Indiana does not require a permit to purchase a gun. You are not required to register a gun. You are not required to have a license. You're required to have a permit if you want to conceal carry a handgun, but not for long guns. You need a permit to open carry a handgun, but not a long gun.

There is a red flag law but given the above, unless a dealer did do a background check or the person was applying for a permit to carry or conceal I don't know how they would get flagged.

I also know that as long as you a not a minor (I believe it's 18 or older but it could be 21) someone can give you a gun.

As I said, my understanding is that it's pretty easy to get a gun in IN if you really want one.

Here is a link to an In.gov faq.

In any case, I'll probably run this by my father tonight or tomorrow to figure it out. He's not a lawyer either, but he does have guns and has a good understanding of the laws.

https://giffords.org/lawcenter/state-laws/background-check-procedures-in-indiana/

Indiana law explicitly requires dealers to conduct a background check prior to transferring a handgun, by contacting the FBI directly.1 Although Indiana has no law explicitly requiring firearms dealers to initiate a background check prior to transferring a long gun, the federal law requires dealers to initiate a background check prior to the transfer of any kind of gun by contacting the FBI directly.

So looks like all rifle purchases go thu the FBI background check. Even in Indiana.

So... was this before or after the FBI interviewed this clown OR did he obtain the gun illegally?

But a good background check would show a previous mental health hold, one would think, except Indiana doesn't have background checks.

The threshold to be deemed mentally unfit to own a gun is very high. A mental health hold won't get him entered into the federal database.

I remember the attack at the temple in Wisconsin.

I wonder if the attacker here thought he was going after Muslims, I seem to recall that being the case in Wi.
