Joe Bidens entreaties to Republicans on his infrastructure bill are picking up steam. But progressives are warning the president not to get too attached to his GOP friends.
I personally dont think the Republicans are serious about addressing the major crises facing this country. Maybe Im wrong, but were certainly not going to wait for an indefinite period of time, said Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
Were gonna move forward rapidly," Sanders vowed. "They have something to say? Now is the time to say it.
Liberals are wary that the GOP may be trying to prolong infrastructure talks for weeks or even months, potentially setting back Democrats ambitious agenda as Biden goes back and forth with the opposition party over how big to go and when. But several prominent progressives also want to keep giving Biden room to try with Republicans up to a still-undetermined point.

(34,195 posts)It seems to me Sanders is pulling Joe one way and Manchen is pulling Joe the other way.
Then there's the GOP who basically just say "Hell no !".

(3,855 posts)People should recognize what a great team they are making by working together to get legislation passed. The Chairman of the Budget Committee holds a lot of power.
I hope people see how powerful Biden's message of unity is. You cannot call yourself a Biden supporter if you don't actively work on his main mission and message, which is one of unity. He wants to bring people together, and I respect that.
If you attack your allies in the Democratic Party, you cannot consider yourself a Biden supporter. You can't have it both ways. Biden is all about unity, and so should we be. WE are Stronger Together.

We need a lot of open communication and compromise to get anything passed.
In a way getting a few pubs on board helps the country as well. If those bills are successful in helping people, it strengthens the non-Trumper wing of their party - which is good for America. It also helps widen the divide between the Trumpers and the rest.

(3,855 posts)There have to be ten Republicans who are not totally insane and see the needs of the people in this country. Maybe it is a fool's errand, but I remain optimistic that we can reach some of them.
Romney, Murkowski, Collins, Portman, Moore Capito...there have to be five more we can find? Surely they see how much need there is.

Because of that I believe its safe to say that any counter offers by the Republicans and offers by the Republicans to negotiate are not being made in good faith and are simply delaying tactics by them to try and use it against the Democrats in the midterms.

Once the low-ball figures are pitched and attempts to drag out the process reveal themselves, he's say "thanks for stopping by" and move on with his program. Like he has repeatedly said, his proposals have enormous bipartisan support everywhere EXCEPT with republicans in congress. In other words, he's driving the point home to republican voters that their representatives and party have abandoned them. And the message is getting through.
This must be the requisite "dems in disarray" piece politico puts out daily.

(21,785 posts)That puts more pressure on the Republicans to recognize that they can either be constructive or get out of the way.
The GQP have adopted a childish all-or-nothing strategy.
There's not much choice but to push through them, or nothing can be done.

(19,104 posts)Biden has been taking this tact from the get go, appear pressured by the left to be able to play the moderate while getting the most progressive agenda in generations passed into law.

(7,434 posts)There's an ideological line of succession. Every iteration has at its core a belief that political war is the only way to win control of government and maintain it. And the terms of that war have nothing to do with governance. Legislation isn't on the GOP's agenda. Culture Wars are. And with any war, it's impossible to wage one unless the adversary is dehumanized and objectified. That's another way of saying that the GOP wants the power that comes with a kind of evangelical GOP belief system, the objective of which is to make a vengeful game of conjuring up for its worshippers a debasement of Democrats. In a nutshell, that's the GOP.
