McCarthy now worried about politicians inciting violence

BY CHARLOTTE KLEIN
APRIL 20, 2021

Republicans are seizing on Rep. Maxine Waters’ remarks about the murder trial of Derek Chauvin, with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Monday vowing to introduce a censure resolution for “dangerous comments” that he claimed “incited violence”—despite the fact that the GOP leader both stood by Donald Trump after the former president was charged with inciting the Capitol insurrection and helped push the Big Lie that fueled the deadly attack ...

... Asked what people should do if Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged with killing George Floyd, is acquitted, Waters said activists must “stay on the street” and “get more confrontational.” Amid the Republican uproar, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Waters was “absolutely not” inciting violence with her comments, Politico reports. “Maxine talked about confrontation in the manner of the civil rights movement,” Pelosi said Monday.

Members of Congress and the news media alike were among those noting McCarthy’s hypocrisy, with Democratic caucus chair Hakeem Jeffries tweeting: “This from the guy who supported a violent insurrection. And voted to overturn a lawful election. Maybe you should sit this one out.”

... McCarthy was also among the 147 Republican lawmakers who still voted to overturn the election results on Trump’s behalf mere hours after his supporters stormed and occupied the Capitol. As CNN’s Stephen Collinson points out, Republicans excused Trump’s directive to “fight like Hell” as “ordinary political rhetoric” during the former president’s second impeachment trial, yet are denying Waters, “a veteran of the civil rights movement and its marches and protests, similar benefit of the doubt” ...

Nothing in Waters' comment incited violence. Confrontation usually isn't violence. Just last week I had a confrontation with my bank. Not a single swing was taken by either side.

What about Donald Trump sending his minions from his "rally" on January 6 to go to the Capitol Building?

"We fight like hell. And if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore," he said.
