(9,897 posts)Bigotry, anger and hate NEVER went away, they went underground and thrived.
Trump came along and gave them public permission to be vocal racists and overt racists once again and they LOVED it...they love HIM for it. Now, that right to be public and open about who they are at the core is again losing license in public places and trusts.
This case and verdict are nothing to be happy about - a man is still gone and needlessly dead. The fact that the justice system seems to have been able to use video evidence to call a murder a murder should not be a bell-weather verdict in jurisprudence (even though it absolutely does feel like it)...it IS a sad commentary on our government of the people, by the people and for the people that so many of us waited with bated breath for the obvious to be stated as such from the jury. Our justice system worked for once, now we must make it work for all.
We have too many people remaining in the USA that simply do not accept that all citizens are equal, that all HUMANS are deserving of respect, and that no human being is "illegal" or "dangerous" because of their appearance or status. These laggards and anachronisms who refuse to believe these truths must be brought public, exposed to the cleansing power of light and attention. We do not need to destroy them - an eye for an eye truly leaves all less sighted or blind; we need only to identify them, and force them to recognize that their beliefs of superiority are, were and ever shall be total fiction.
Hendrix was right - "when the power of love is greater than he love of power, the world will know peace". Our goal must be peace not power, forgiveness not retribution, justice not punishment.
A lost spirit can rest a little less tormented tonight; but it is on all of us that remain, to make that pain into power and turn that power into lasting change, and finally to make change into true justice for all.

(3,384 posts)It sets a new precedence as so many white supremacists in law enforcement officers thought they could just do whatever the hell they want. Including cold blooded murder in broad daylight. Do I think this will remove all racism? HELL NO. CMON NOW!! NO ONE is suggesting that or is that naive. But making Chauvin an example should curtail some of the repulsive treatment of people of color at the hands of law enforcement we have seen repeatedly through history. And for that, I am DEEPLY grateful today to the jury and the system of justice. And I will sing that from the rooftops. Hallelujah for justice!

(9,897 posts)I hope this does set precedence and lead to real change in policing tactics and latitude given an officer's word in court. We need to have policing that works with and for the community, not to protect its own at all costs...
Hopefully, today marks a real inflection point...

(3,384 posts)I saw reality sinking in and the tone changed quickly. There was suddenly consequences. Something those RW lunatics were not anticipating. They prance around doing whatever the fuck they want bc for years, thats what they have been doing. And they KNOW they have people in high places that will protect them.
Even on a local level I have seen it. For awhile, we had people going to stores acting like absolute assholes about having to wear a mask. In one situation, the store itself actually pressed charges and the mask hole skipped town. No shit. He skipped town! Now theres a warrant for his arrest. Hes on the LAM over a goddamn mask!! He AND his son! Since then, no more maskhole Karen/Chad outbursts. Look at Costco. No one can wear a mask to any other store. But they all wear masks to Costco bc Costco provided consequences. When people see that there ARE consequences, behavior is often instantly modified. Much like disciplining a child. Consequences matter. This Chauvin case is not JUST about the murder of George Floyd. It is also about consequences for gross breach of law enforcement code of conduct. About law and order. And how we can in good conscience tackle racism and corruption in law enforcement moving forward.

(814 posts)They hate everything good, fair, and decent. This verdict is justice. Republicans hate justice -and fairness, morality, dignity, and democracy, to name a few.

(3,030 posts)He says we are a lawless society: claims BLM is racist and thinks cops can do anything to alleged offenders (even for allegedly passing a fake $20). And besides, he says, cops get killed too.
If I present facts, he says "that's just your opinion".
