Newsweek and the Rise of the Zombie Magazine
How a decaying legacy magazine is being used to launder right-wing ideas and conspiracy theories.
Writing in The Columbia Journalism Review last year, Daniel Tovrov depicted Newsweek, once one of Americas most distinguished magazines, as a shell of its former self. All that was left was clickbait, op-eds from the likes of Nigel Farage and Newt Gingrich, and a general sense of drift. Nobody I spoke to for this article had a sense of why Newsweek exists, Tovrov wrote. While the name Newsweek still carries a certain authorityremnants of its status as a legacy outletand the magazine can still bag an impressive interview now and then, it serves an opaque purpose in the media landscape.
Last week, Newsweek suggested one possible purpose: The legitimization of narratives straight out of the right-wing fever swamps. An op-ed written by John Eastman, a conservative lawyer and founding director of the Claremont Institutes Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence, coyly suggested that Kamala Harris, who was born in California, may not be eligible to serve as vice president because her parents were immigrants. It was, as many pointed out, a racist attack with no constitutional merit, on par with the birther conspiracy theory that claimed Barack Obama was born in Kenya. Within a few hours, Eastmans op-ed was being brandished by President Trump, who told reporters he had heard Harris may not be eligible to serve.

SNIP
IBT Media says it has an ongoing "working relationship" with Olivet University which includes the school providing design assistance and computer resources, and IBT Media providing internships for students. It characterizes it as similar to the relationships Silicon Valley companies have with local universities.
However, publication Christianity Today alleges that IBT Media has a close relationship both with Olivet and with its founder, controversial evangelical pastor David J. Jang.
It claims that Jang is an investor in and has exercised control over IBT Media, that Davis was formerly director of journalism at Olivet, and that Uzac was its Treasurer, at least at one time.
Executives characterize the relationship as between the institutions and not the founders, and that it was purely operational.
IBT Media is part of Economist's "Ideas Channel", an ad-network based on mindset rather than demographics, set up in part to reach "an intellectual and often influential audience interested in business, politics and science".
The company's Bizu video platform partners with IDG Communications and France 24. for content, and Digitas and PJA Advertising and others for monetization of the platform.
The company's brands publish to a number of 3rd party platforms, including Flipboard, Zite, and The Washington Post's Social Reader.
And much more....
Its a tactic for spinning r-w views on social media. It might gain a little credibility due to Newsweek once having been a mainstream news magazine.
If someone wanted to, they could search out the references to Newsweek articles and counteract it with this article. If I was still teaching media, its the type of thing Id have students do as a project.

I had clicked on a couple of Newsweek headlines recently and was surprised how stupid the "articles" were.
Thanks to the other posters for clarifying history.
No point in wasting any more time with the Newsweek puke funnel.
