Cher responds to Biden calling mass killing of Armenians a genocide

On Saturday, Cher, who is half Armenian, responded to President Joe Biden calling the mass killing of Armenians a genocide. Biden became the first U.S. president to acknowledge the killing of more than a million Armenians by Ottoman Turks more than a century ago as genocide.

"After decades of struggle, the United States government has finally made sure that it is on the right side of history thanks to President Biden," the 74-year-old icon, who heavily campaigned for Biden during the 2020 presidential election, told TODAY in a statement.Cher, who was born Cherilyn Sarkisian, is one of the most famous Armenian-Americans. In 2017, she lent her support to the historical film "The Promise," a period drama centered around the massacre of Armenians during World War One in what is now Turkey.

"People don't know about the genocide and the Turks have never admitted it and it is very important," Cher said to Access Hollywood at the film's premiere, that was also attended by Kim Kardashian and her sister, Kourtney. "Hitler said if they don't remember the Armenians, they will never remember the Jews. But obviously, he was wrong."

"My grandparents escaped and my friend's grandmother she escaped, but many people didn't," Cher added. "I am half-Armenian, but when I went to Armenia, it was so strange, because I saw people there who looked exactly like me. If you look at Kim and her sister, we have something here."

A few years ago we went to see Barbra Streisand in the large arena there. She was amazing as you would expect. Walking through the airport on the way home I saw a billboard highlighting Cher’s up coming series of concerts in two weeks. It took little convincing to get husband to agree to come back in two weeks. Cher is gloriously talented, intelligent caring and of course glamorously stunningly beautiful. After the concert I thought 2 down and two divas
to go. I still needed to see Diana Ross and Bette Midler. Surprisingly in the elevator up to our room was a billboard announcing Diana Ross’ concert the following week. Yep, back we tracked for our 3rd trip in a month. Wow, Diana was sensational. Such talent and grace. It was an excellent show. I the. Had to wait a couple of years to finish up my Diva list. I took a work assignment in NYC for a year and was able to see Bette Midler on Broadway in Hello Dolly. She was, naturally fabulous. I love her talent and wit. She is an absolute treasure.

Drew four aces for sure! Or four Queens - in the show-biz royalty realm, of course.

The latter-day Fab Four! Or better yet, the Femme Fab Four!

I’m either being too ridiculous or having too much fun with this, or both. Those great dames do inspire, though, must say!

For sure it just seemed like crazy good luck and the planets aligning to get to see the first three femme fab in a month and the last on the next year. Bette Midler was joined by David Hyde Smith of Frazier fame in the Broadway show. The tickets for the show were hard to come by and pricy but turned out to be very good seats.

...Sometime in the 80s, I was teaching about Hitler and the Jews, when a student who was also
Armenian, asked why I wasn't teaching about that too. I learned a whole lot from that experience
and I thought I knew a lot of history, (I was teaching history) but I didn't know and was never told about the " Armanian Massacre." Afterwards I looked it up and found out the truth about it)
.....(shows how much more I needed to learn, when I think I knew it all.)

Joe Biden has done the world a favor by bringing this up today, and explaining it to all of us.

I only became aware of it probably sometime in the past 10 years. It has definitely not been given the attention that it should have been given in our history lessons.

They are predictably indignant about this turn of events. If it weren't a handy place for missile sites, this label would have been applied long ago.

Had a blast. The music was great, the theatrics exceptional.

One of the thing we really miss is seeing live performances. Concerts, theater, etc. We are lucky to have a nice venue in town.

When do you folks see returning to live performances?

About having his hotel shut down, this will upset the Turks.

And we needed the strategic alliance with the Turks. Without them we could not have maintained our operations in Iraq, and to a lesser extent Afghanistan. They are a member of NATO, and provided a strong buffer for the USSR / Russia. Kennedy housed missiles in Turkey that were equivalent to the missiles Russia wanted to put in Cuba, which precipitated the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The Istanbul Canal also restricted the USSR / Russia to one Naval Base on the Atlantic Ocean, in Murmansk, which was iced in for 1/2 the year. This was an excellent strategic benefit for NATO against Russia / Warsaw Pact forces if hostilities every broke out.

With Turkey moving closer to Russia and further away from the US and NATO in the last decade plus, the downsides to recognizing the Armenian genocide became more palatable.

But if Turkey was still a strong US / NATO ally, we probably would not have said anything. The fact that we kicked them out of the F-35 program and denied them the ability to purchase it was a major indicator that this would eventually happen. They were kicked out because we feared they'd sell / provide the technology or even an airframe to our strategic enemies.

It does seem Turkey’s importance to NATO is reduced. We still have 50 nukes in Turkey, at what point do they get pulled out?

We store nuclear weapons in bulk at Diego Garcia, and in other, more secure, locations around the world.
