Michael Collins, Apollo Astronaut (1930-2021)

Michael Beschloss @BeschlossDC
Michael Collins (1930-2021):

Michael Collins flew the Apollo 11 command module Columbia around the Moon while his crewmates, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, made the first crewed landing on the surface...

Speaking to NASA in 2009, he said: "I really believe that if the political leaders of the world could see their planet from a distance of 100,000 miles their outlook could be fundamentally changed.

“That all-important border would be invisible, that noisy argument silenced.

“The tiny globe would continue to turn, serenely ignoring its subdivisions, presenting a unified facade that would cry out for unified understanding, for homogeneous treatment.

“The Earth must become as it appears, blue and white, not capitalist or communist, blue and white, not rich or poor, blue and white, not envious or envied."

“Small, shiny, serene, blue and white, fragile.”

2,000 miles away from 2 other humans (Armstrong & Aldrin) and 250,000 away from the rest of humanity.

God this makes me sad to hear about his passing.

I would have been disappointed to have been in his position. I would have wanted to stand on the Moon.

as a 9 year old that I would always remember. He had his job and it wasn't the glamour one of walking on the moon. These were my thoughts as I 9 year old. I always march to a different drummer.
