GOP seeks to convince vaccine skeptics within its own ranks

Mississippi has the nation’s lowest vaccination rate, with less than 31% of its population receiving at least one anti-coronavirus shot. And the four states that proceed it in national rankings, Alabama, Louisiana, Idaho and Wyoming, according to an Associated Press analysis of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. They all vote reliably Republican in presidential races.

Republican pollster Frank Luntz, who has been researching how best to convince vaccine skeptics, says he believes the effort is most effective when it avoids politics, with people hearing about the benefits of immunization from doctors, not politicians. He said many skeptics are persuaded to get the shot because it benefits their friends and family, not just themselves.

“If it’s politicized, they will not reach herd immunity,” said Luntz, who said that means giving credit to both sides, praising the Trump administration for Operation Warp Speed and the Biden White House’s efficient and effective distribution of vaccines.

Luntz argued that public health officials should be targeting Republicans in much the same ways that national campaigns sought to win over holdouts among Black Americans and other minority groups.

1. So his solution is to praise Trump and give him credit for his handling of the pandemic?

It seems like to the GOP, the solution is always more lies.

What better demonstration of power than contradicting reality?

Can always hope, can’t we?

It IS the Trump virus, after all.

10. It does not have to mutate to kill them.

You get the vaccine you are pretty much golden. 150 deaths of 100 million vaccinated people. But in the states mentioned people will continue to die at a high rate compared to states with high vaccination rates.

Unfortunately we have pesky things like the Constitution and due process, as well as practically no public support for such policies.

I personally would offer extra stimulus checks to anyone who is fully vaccinated by a particular date.

like Tucker Carlson are actively discouraging people from getting vaccinated. Those are the people they listen to, and as long as they're pushing anivax messaging, no other messaging will get through to them.

Those people don't want Covid to end in this country, at least as long as Biden is in office.

The benefit to their friends and family is that they wont die. If they're too stupid to understand that without a targeted messaging campaign kissing trumps ass, I guess theyll go ahead and die then.

We WILL get to herd immunity eventually...with OR WITHOUT them.

11. Great point. We vaccinated folks are protected and safely adding to herd immunity.

States like Mississippi will eventually reach herd immunity. But it will result in the death of many.
