The GOP Really, Really Doesn't Want Washington, DC, to Be a State

Really, really, *really.*
JACKIE FLYNN MOGENSEN
Assistant Editor

Late last month, the House passed a bill that would make Washington, DC, the country’s 51st state. With the bill set to be considered in the Senate, it’s the closest DC has ever been to achieving statehood. And Republicans aren’t thrilled.

While proponents argue the bill would ensure that the 712,000 Americans who live in the nation’s capital are fairly represented in Congress, critics say that adding DC as a state is unconstitutional or that it’s simply a Democratic “power grab.” (Republicans have tried out other, more bizarre arguments against DC statehood, including that it doesn’t have an airport or a landfill, my colleague Matt Cohen reports.)

Additionally, Republicans including Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) are pushing a solution that nobody seems to want: Making DC part of Maryland.

Seems just as legit. Oh yeah - because Republicans actually have a chance of winning in Virginia.

States get senators, 700,000 DC folks do not get a single Senator since they aren’t a state while smaller/similar states get 2.

Made a great point. We will add DC to Maryland when Maine returns to Massachusetts. There goes her seat, and all the other Repubs from that State.

As for Willard Mitt Romney. Even over 150 yrs ago, the American Government thought the Mormon's were nuts and moved to contain them.
They initially tried to form a giant State known as Deseret, but the feds kept taking land from them and making other States to control their power. That is how and why Utah is the shape it is now.
Glad that the old powers to be did it.
