I will consider it my duty as an American to delete my account.
Anyone else?

(6,205 posts)my deceased son's account. Why? Check out #6 and #11.
As for my son's account I use it to keep in touch with his friends. We still have not had his celebration of life and putting announcements on his page is an easy way to keep in touch.

(34,170 posts)I know people call it the toilet of the internet, but my Facebook experience is defined by my friends. I dont get any political ads let alone crazy RW propaganda.
Facebook is a primary link to family and friends. I keep my page politically free and delete any political stuff from others (can be a cathartic activity ) I have no one in my friends list that I do not know personally. Since letter writing is a lost art, Facebook is an important link to my peeps.

(3,258 posts)Use it as a way to brag about how wonderful they are. Which in turn can make others feel like their life is not as perfect. But, it also serves a purpose. A lot of elderly people get to see what their close relatives and friends are doing. It makes my mother feel connected with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Facebook has helped my 90 year old mother survive the covid times while being isolated.

I may post there 4 or 5 times a year at most now.

(111,101 posts)It should not be closed to any opinions. It should open to all Americans. It will serve no purpose if it only a strategy and sounding board for the conspiracists that are afoot.

(7,263 posts)I am not in favor of censorship.
If enough peeps don't use it for politics it loses it's influence. If they do and are not called on the carpet, then that is the majority speaking.
FB seems to be trying to get better, slowly, but it will never be a jewel of progressivism. It is a Corporate Money magnet after all.
Instead, We Progressives just need to continue to shine the light of Honest Reason and Truth on it and watch the cock-a-roaches skitter and scuttle about trying to regain the shadows.

(142 posts)Deactivate will just make your account invisible within Facebook while you are away, but you can sign on again and resume your account at any time. You can still use the Messenger app while your Facebook account is deactivated. Deleting is permanent, but not until 30 days after requesting the deletion. You can stop your account from being deleted if you sign in before the 30 days is up. I've deleted my account 2 times already. I'm on my 3rd Facebook account, but I mostly leave it deactivated and just use Messenger. Messenger is useful for reaching people I know. Facebook app with the feed is a waste of time and annoying.
BoringUsername
(142 posts)prevents people from sending you friend requests, including the garbage requests from people you don't know, so you won't have any of those waiting for you if ever go back in there. It also keeps people from writing stuff on your wall or replying to your posts. No one can find you other than people you were already Facebook friends. People will often deactivate their Facebook accounts when searching for jobs to keep potential employers from snooping on their Facebook account. Even your friends cannot see your profile in Facebook when it is deactivated. Your friends will still be able to see you in Messenger when your account is deactivated. No ads on Messenger like Facebook too. Basically, this way you can use the good part of Facebook, which is Messenger and not participate in any of the other Facebook garbage.

(8,287 posts)post on your wall. I like that.
If they tag you, you get a notification but its not on your wall. I have it set so only .I can post to my wall. Or Feed. Its great. I have my FB locked down and rarely ever post anything public. I have 180 friends and I know everyone of them.
BoringUsername
(142 posts)But your friends can still write weird comments on your posts that were shared to them while you are not around. That's why I like to keep it deactivated when not using it for a while.
Another thing to be careful of is your profile pic and background pic. Those must be public. I found Facebook by default lets anyone comment on those. There is a setting some place to not allow it. It's not very obvious. Some stranger dude wrote a comment on my profile pic once.

The will re-instate Trump, as he is too profitable and Zuckerberg is totally cool with his fascism.

An old expression: "Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater"
..................................
"Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater" is an idiomatic expression for an avoidable error in which something good is eliminated when trying to get rid of something bad,
or in other words, rejecting the favorable along with the unfavorable.

(219 posts)...for online connections I have beefed up my presence in LinkedIn, and I am very careful in how I use it. Way too easy to get in conversations with bots.
In my long experience, face to face or voice to voice are the only ways to make a real connection. I treat online communications like a dating app - the only goal is to get the first date, face to face.
