'My fellow American': Biden sends letter to stimulus check recipients, echoing mailer sent by Trump

WASHINGTON Americans who got a stimulus check from the federal government during the third round of direct payments this spring can also expect a letter from President Joe Biden. ... The one-page letter, which has started arriving in the mailboxes of recipients, was mailed by the Internal Revenue Service but written on White House stationery and includes Bidens signature at the bottom. It is similar to a letter that Donald Trump sent out last year, prompting accusations that he was politicizing the IRS.

The IRS said in a statement that the letter is required under the American Rescue Plan, but later issued an updated statement that deleted that sentence. The agency said the original statement contained a technical error. The law directs the Treasury Department to notify those who are eligible for a stimulus check but doesn't explicitly state who should send that notice.
A government watchdog group that slammed Trump for sending out his letter following the first round of stimulus payments said Bidens letter also was a bad idea.
"While what we see here from President Biden is not as bad as what we saw from President Trump namely insisting the checks feature his signature, potentially delaying them at the worst possible time that doesn't make it good, said Jordan Libowitz, a spokesman for Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. ... Trump started a troubling trend of using taxpayer resources to send self-serving letters to the public, Libowitz said. ... Biden would be smart to put this practice out to pasture along with a lot of the behavior from his predecessor, he said.

(2,399 posts)Why should't the Dems and Biden use the weapons available.
Politics is a full-contact sport.
I think the message has to be simple...for the simple...
"Biden and the Dems saved the country...and your ass!"

(10,168 posts)credit for the ACA, or explaining it. The GQP muddied the waters so, that many, many people came to believe that the ACA and Obamacare were two different things.
ACA=ok. Obamacare=no way.
I want President Biden to make it CRYSTAL CLEAR that everything American citizens are getting now is from President Biden and the Democrats. ALL of it!
Send us a letter a week!!!

From the government watchdog group CREW:
Trumps adult children have cost taxpayers a lot of money over the years, but this time, its different. CREW got records from the Secret Service that show that in just the thirty days after Donald Trump left the presidency, his childrens travel cost taxpayers more than $140,000. That figure, however, does not include charges at Trump properties in Bedminster, Palm Beach and Briarcliff, New York, which would likely bring the actual total much higher.
The reason these charges are different is that they all occurred after Joe Bidens inauguration, and, ordinarily, a former presidents children are no longer entitled to Secret Service protection. Donald Trump took the unusual step of extending the protection for his family members and three top appointees by six months, giving them that much more time to funnel money to his own properties. CREW filed a Freedom of Information Act request in February to get a snapshot of the costs.

Secret Service report details lodging and rental car costs for December visit
News NEWS | April 27, 2021
Former Vice President Mike Pences 2020 holiday trip to Vail and Beaver Creek came with a high price tag, mostly on accommodations for his security detail.
Documents provided by the United States Secret Service and shared by the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington shows expenses incurred between December 17, 2020, and January 3, 2021 include 77 charges from rental car companies at Eagle County Regional Airport and Denver International Airport, and lodging expenses at several area hotels including over $270,000 spent at the Marriott Vail Mountain and more than $80,000 at the Ritz Carlton Bachelor Gulch.
The trip came with a massive bill to taxpayers, with Secret Service protection alone costing $757,527.85, CREW reports. Mike and Karen Pence were the only two listed protectees on the documents.

(50,560 posts)I think it was great that he sent it...but could there possibly have been a way to send it from the White House and not the IRS? I opened the mailbox and found the letter from the IRS and thought, "oh fuck, what did I do wrong?" Then I opened it to find a note from President Biden.

I got mine today, and it says
Now, the problem is that this letter is dated April 29, 2021, but is referring to a payment which landed in my account on March 24. Reading the letter, it sounds like another is coming within 7 days, which is inaccurate.
Sorry, Joe, but I trashed your letter.
