This week saw the PM fail for the fourth time in a row to win an election outright. But unlike previous failures, it was his Likud supporters who denied him the victory
At 10 minutes before midnight on Tuesday night, Benjamin Netanyahu informed President Reuven Rivlin yet again that he had failed to form a government.
Its hard to exaggerate how painful the failure is for Israels longest-serving prime minister and what it means for his legacy.
Over the past two years, beginning with the failure after the April 2019 race, Netanyahu has turned to increasingly desperate and unorthodox measures to attain the victory that keeps eluding him.
Throughout the first three races, his campaign turned increasingly negative. Hidden cameras were deployed at Arab voting stations, apparently intended (according to the political campaign firm that distributed them) to intimidate Arab Israelis and suppress turnout. The centerpiece of Netanyahus campaign was the claim that his rival Benny Gantz was mentally ill, that his phone had been compromised by Iranian intelligence, and that he was vulnerable to extortion over purported evidence on that phone of his infidelity to his wife.

Didn't Bibi live with the Kushners back in the day?

He's still trying to hold on. Before you know it, he'll be calling the election a fraud.
Appearing to hold out hope he could still stay in power, Netanyahu appealed to ultranationalist Naftali Bennett to join him and form a "solid right-wing bloc" controlling 59 seats in parliament, a number still short of a majority.
An embrace by Bennett, of the Yamina party, would persuade other right-wing legislators currently pledged to Lapid cross back, Netanyahu said in remarks following Lapid's nomination.

(16,927 posts)One hears stories about how much better off the US would be if it wasn't locked in to the 2-party system.
And then you see how others deal with the "deals" that need to be made to form their own 'majority.'
I don't know how one can keep up with all of the 'deals' being made and how they would impact every single bill going into the legislative system. It seems to me that it would create a "Manchin-on-Steroids!"

(82,849 posts)The tiger he's been riding for the last few years is ravenously hungry and will gobble up Bibi in a twinkling. He has to keep riding it because he has nothing else to divert it to. As soon as he loses his grip, he's done for. He will spend the rest of his life either on the run or in prison.

(269,050 posts)The voters are just as corrupt
The very right wing ultra Orthodox have a stronghold on Israeli politics. I lost hope for Israel's soul when Rabin was assassinated.
American Orthodox are moving in droves to Israel, building settlements on Palestinian territory. As a woman of Jewish faith and heritage I cannot abide by that. I think the left may never regain the influence it once had there.

(94,594 posts)The Israeli President has given the opposition leader the RIGHT to try and form a Government. There is no assurance he'll be able to do so (wasn't able to the last four times).
