There were two drugstores and three supermarkets in the town I grew up in. None of them sold condoms. All the kids who wanted to have sex (there were quite a few; the only things to do in St. Maries, Idaho, in the 1970s were weed smoking, beer drinking and sex - and since no one in my class got pregnant while we were in high school, condom use must have been rampant) had to drive 60 miles one-way to Spokane to invest in Trojans.

Cute side story: One of my troops in Berlin was really interested in Ancient Greece. The University of Maryland had a one-day Ancient Greece seminar on a Saturday; because we were working that day he asked for it off and I gave it to him. He comes in on Sunday and we asked him, "so, did you learn anything?" "Yeah...I learned all rubbers are named after Greek gods."
